Hello everyone!
This prob has me stumped!! I've built this system for a friend(what a sucker I am).

After complete format...While trying to copy a full CD(Windows98) to the HD in DOS, it would start copying the data & then stop giving me an error 'Drive not found'...Thinking it was a hardware issue, I replaced the CDR & cable. It now will copy 90% of the files(again, from the new CDR to the c drive) and all of a sudden stop..giving me the same error...Thinking it could be my win98 disk, I tried my win95 disk...same deal..

I can pull up the "DIR" E drive in DOS with no problems & that part seems to function properly.

I went ahead and installed windows from the CDR normally...The damn CDR works...kinda...Copys files very slowly & eventually will lock up the computer!!! Please tell me any Ideas that you may have.

MB-Asus K7V..(I think been awhile since I built it...recently given back to me due to lock-ups in Windows)
1 GhZ AMD processor Tbird I think
Gforce2
256meg ram
Maxtor 7200rpm HD

wow...just about to throw it out the window!!

Thanks,
Ross

First turn on your PM function... second before you started trying to do work with this machine did you download and install the Via 4-in-1 .32 files/drivers and or the drivers for the IDE controllers from the mobo driver CD?

UNfortunately...no...I am sure that I did it when I orig. built it....but not this time...I basically did the "GIVE IT BACK TO ME>>>WHAT DID YOU SCREW UP??!!!" , did a quick re-format and essentually blamed it on Win ME....What is the PM function? (I don't have the manual in front of me) He is bringing all of the drivers/manuals to me tomorrow)...

Could this be the problem??.(I am guessing so)

Thanks,
Ross

The PM function is the Private Message function here at Anandtech... he means you should enable it in your profile so that people can send you private messages when you ask for assistance or information.

<< He is bringing all of the drivers/manuals to me tomorrow)... >>

<--should have had those before you did the reformat but that's water under the bridge as they say..Give a true listing of the components in this machine please so suggestions can be more useful thank you for turning on your PM also.. <edit> clear the CMOS also to reset the BIOS and definitely try to make notes on paper of the default BIOS settings then change as you go to increase performance after you have a stable Win(whatever version) install with all the basic software included(Windows updates). "Fast and dirty" got me a loss of 6 months of data that took over three days( approx. 30 hrs off and on) to pull back off my backup HardDrive....NO JOY there !!! Don't hesitate to ask anyone on these forums for help if they have this mobo(iwill kk266 here not a big Asus fan but a KT133 or 133a all the same chipset pretty much) and try this 🙂Linky for research while you wait for the original disks and literature.😉

Wow!..Good link!! thanks!...Yeah, I know better than "Quick & dirty"...I usually just build systems for myself & can afford to research & take my time...Unfortunately, I have been known to open my fat mouth & get stuck building a system for a friend or a co-worker(as in this case). I am not always that motivated to go home after work & the gym to dig into someone else's computer that locks up...haha...live & learn...When someone asks me if I know anything about computers: ...I'll reply, "Don't know anything about those damn things"!!
Thanks,
Ross
