WoW download is slow, why?

I've been trying to get the full game via the DL client. I'm getting anywhere from 100kb/s-400kb/s. Steam gives me full bandwidth DLs. IT can't be because Blizzard is strapped for cash.

wow uses bit torrent to DL/patch

your ISP is prob fucking you over

you can try opening ports, blizz has a help page about it but its most likely your ISP

Since it's a P2P type of download, if you are uploading a lot, that'll slow down your download speeds.

It's been awhile since I used the WoW downloader, but isn't there a button or setting you can check to essentially limit the upload? I can't remember, but if there is, try enabling that setting and see if your speeds improve.

steam has a lot of ISPs and similars hosting their content for free. Blizard just has a few with most of the data via p2p IIRC.

That being said, steam servers only get loaded when a popular new game gets released, otherwise the load on them is rather small/constant. Blizzard has all their users updating at about the same time as they all need the same patch once it is released.

Both have large amounts of data that need moving, but the usage pattern makes it a completly different situation.

But as mentioned, as it is via p2p for blizzard, then it could be either the p2p settings, your router or your ISP effecting your speeds (and that is before you also add in other users that can effect p2p transfers).

their client manages this.
It's the ISP blocking him

From what I remember, there should also be an option to turn off P2P and to enable a regular HTTP download. You can see if that helps.
