WoW delay

I just built a new system, got all the driver and bios' updated. Loaded up WoW, and at the character creation screen every 40 - 60 sec, the display freezes and is unresponsive for about 10sec. I can still move the mouse around though. Anyone have any ideas? Here is my system configuration (just built her yesterday!):

Lian-Li PC-60 case
ASUS A8N SLI deluxe
AMD Athlon 64 3200+
Thermaltake Venus 12 CPU fan
Crucial PC-3200 DDR 512MB x2 (1GB total)
Segate 7200.8T 250MB SATA HD
EVGA 6800GT 265MB
SUN Microsystems 24.1" LCD Monitor
NEC DVD+/-RW 16x
3.5" Sony Floppy drive
CoolMax 400W Silent Switching Pwr Supply
And last but not least.... my cool New Egg sticker!!!!

is the hard drive running crazy when this 10second pause is happening?

also, make sure you are running the latest standalone NF4 driver pack from nvidia, and the latest whql video drivers.

i would ONLY run the windows updates, and those two NV updates.. let XP take care of the rest.

if you format, try that and it still does it.. I'll be suprised.

also, try fail safe AND the "performance" setting in the bios.
see what the difference is in that loading screen with each one.

im trying to help the best i can here, given the information you've layed out. but I personally would try these things.

I've heard of nvidia cards doing this in everquest 2. It actually happened to me and I switched to ATI.

But... You may try these "fixes" and see if they help..

1. Enable at least 2x AA and AF in your nvidia control panel.
2. Change max frames to render ahead to 1
3. Run 76.xx drivers or newer.

They helped eq2 a little bit, but this is a documented bug and I got a x800xl for cheap anyway.

I had this problem on one of my comps. Either reinstalling wow, or getting new drivers ( and using driver cleaner in safe mode to uninstall) fixed it. The problem comp was an amd 3000+, bfg 5900.

could try disabling fast writes with riva tuner, though i think that was perhaps only a problem with NF3 + 6800. Worth a try if none of the others' suggestions work though. Good luck.

You might want to check WoW's website. I had a issue like yours. Mine was caused from the N-force either net. Had to change some settings and bam everything ok! Give it a go.

There are a few threads on the tech support section of the WOW forums that talk about this. I had the same problem too, all you have to do is mess with your net settings a bit and you should be OK. I was disconnecting about 60 seconds into logging on, then every 20 minutes after that, now I'm running fine.
