I tried to try costo gas for my car...98 honda accord, I got the cheapest one for $1.55 (in east bay), then today I filled up with chevron..

the difference is VERY noticeable... my car pulls so much nicer.... never going back to costco for gas again...

BTW is there a gas rebate bonus credit card for chevron?? (ala 5% shell chase gas rebate card)

Is there really a difference between different gas stations and between the different grades (reg, premium, etc..)? And which gas station has the best gas?

I've always been weary of "new" tanks

what do u mean by new tanks??

Think about it. If you go to a brand new gas station, with brand new tanks in the ground and brand new pumps, there is bound to be some "residue" left over from the manufacturing and assembly processes

maybe I think too much

We recently got a new gas station at the walmart I work at and they have been causing a few price wars. Some people bitched about how the gas sucked because it was walmart gas station. The truth is that the same trucks filling the gas station fill the ones all over the place and I believe that most gas is the same.

There are differences between the grades, yes. As far as if they're overly noticeable: I couldn't give you a fact based answer, but my own opinion would be yes.

As for which gas stations have the best: I always look in the following order- Quiktrip, Texaco, BP/Chevron/Amoco. But that's just me.

it really is!!
at least where i live i find shell to be the worst possible gas.
doesn't last as long as others, and makes my car run like ass.
I need Esso (Exxon) or better (Sunoco)

No, it's not. Some brands of gas are better perfomance-wise than others and, IMO, are well worth the extra few cents.
Basically: Chevron > Texaco > 76 > Shell > Citgo > Mobil > BP > Exxon > Arco > any crap Costco, Walmart, or Safeway gas

I'd avoid Arco and grocery store gas at all times, as they usually include additives like methanol all year round.

Where I live, the differences are even more extreme because almost all the gas comes down the pipeline from the Texaco refinery in Anacortes, WA, which uses lower-grade Alaskan oil, while Chevron gas comes from the refinery in SLC, UT, which uses higher-grade Gulf oil.

edit: forgot 76

In many areas one refinery produces the gas for that area. All the stations buy their gas from that refinery. They do use different additive packages. That is usually the only difference.

Does the performance that certain brand give such a big performance difference? I mean is it even noticeable? If you really think so in daily driving, you're just imaging it. It's like people who put a sticker on their car and really think that it is going faster.

Gas is not gas. As others stated the additives and quality of refining vary from brand to brand. In LA, since there are Arco, 76 and Chevron refineries around all the gas does not come from the same refinery. The grades also have nothing to do with the quality of the gas. The simple explanation of grades is the higher the grade the less likely it is to explode, explode when its not suppose to. IE, when gas/air is compressed, it heats up. A higher grade gas can be compressed more before it will explode whereas the lower grade gases will explode at a lower pressure. In modern cars running higher compression engines this difference is critical. Detonation sends engine parts through your block, not good.

And, in general, Chevron is generally agreed upon as being the best gas. Personally, I use 76 gas religiously. They're gas is also considered high quality. Arco is like cat piss. I wouldn't touch the stuff unless I had no choice.
