*cough* buy filters *cough*

Seriously, though, where do you keep your computer that that much dust built up in a month and a half? A lot of pets in the household? One thing that's been constant for computers since way back when ... dust = bad

Yep, obviously lacking in filters. I've had my computer for almost a year, and I've never cleaned it except for the filters, and there's barely any dust at all anywhere inside.

Are filters that good that it almost keeps your case empty of dust? If so then I'm sold. Also, where do the filters go, outside or inside the case?

I had my Alpha 8045 stuffed up with a layer of thick dust a long time ago. I wasn't really paying attention to my CPU temps but my panaflo wasn't moving much air so I'm guessing it was getting pretty hot. Since then I installed filters and clean out my case and heatsink monthly.

I've got an Antec SX660 with a built-in washable filter that goes over the front intake fans inside the grille so they're not visible from the exterior. I've also got an SX1080B with the same filter in the front, but it came with no filter for the side intake fan so I used one of these to rectify the sit'iation and the case has seen minimal dust, but it still needs the occasional dusting. Nowehere near the amount that used to just cover every component. It's just a simple cleaning and drying and it's back up running. Airflow doesn't suffer much from these filters as the temps don't budge more than a degree at most. When they get dirty the fans do struggle a bit, but then I know when it's time to clean 'em :D

Well, i Don't have pets, and I keep my computer right on the floor. I have a SX 1200 so I have 3 intake fans which i might add got a LOT of dust in them after not cleaning them for hmm... 6 months? lol.... I really gotta vaccum my computer more often.

For the heatsink i just physically removed the dust with my fingers. There was like a layer of dust so it came off easily =D Pretty amazing. Gotta vaccum it fully today =P

If you take a shower every once in a while, there'll be less dust to clog your machine.....:disgust:

a good cheap way to filter the fan intake air is to use cheapo pantyhose; simply cover the outer side of the fan with it and gather it around the outer edge of the fan. a regular pair of pantyhose should last a pretty long time, even if you're replacing the filtering pieces instead of cleaning them (the best way, really)

another reason to have a pantyhose fetish? :p

And if you're really cheap, use the generic versions of Scotchbrite that don't scrub a pot worth a damn, but would be ideal for this type of use.

Carefull with the vacum cleaner, you can actually get a static discharge off it that may wipe out electrical components (been there, done that). best to blow it out with compressed air.

Well i only vaccum the heatsink tips and the front of the case. The inside of the case is relatively clean :)

I use the filter material, from the hardware store, that comes in rolls and you can buy as much as you need. It's pretty loosely bound together, but it's still better than nothing. Didn't wanna take the chance of reducing air flo.

Besides, It basically serves as nothing more than a cheap air filtration system becuase I've not had the side panel on my box since I got this puppy! Does that make one a geek? :p hehe
