Personal experience has been that the subscriber route for web sites is pretty much the last nail in the coffin. Sure, you pay $30 for a year and 6 months later the site goes away because of lack of funding. I have paid for subscriptions on two other sites, and within months they had gone away. I'm done with it. It's not the answer and there are two dozen other sites offering the same exact services for free.
Not to say that I don't love the AT forums, they're pretty much the only part of the site I use. I have noticed them getting more and more bogged down over the last few months, which is disconcerting, but I will continue to use them while it's tolerable for free because I enjoy the people here and have made many friends. I just don't think it's a good alternative to take away from the free users to enhance a paying user's experience, which is obviously what's happened because of the major slowdown I've seen lately. It's not wrong to offer a subscription based service, and $30 is a drop in the bucket, I'll grant you, but whether it's $5/year or $100/year, that's not the issue. I would be far more likely to pay $30/year and probably more if it were done on a volunteer donation basis. That's just me I know, because most people won't pay either way. Regardless, I can't imagine the number of subscribers is overwhelming at this point, and if that's not true, I'll be suprised.
