Morley Safer reports on the new generation of "millennials." They are in their late teens to early twenties and could be ill prepared for a demanding workplace.

If they are, we have nobody to blame but ourselves. We've done nothing but pamper kids and worry about their self-esteem and do everything but put them into a plastic bubble to make sure they never get hurt instead of instilling a work ethic and competency so that they can achieve and be productive in life. (I'm speaking in the same generalities as this piece from ABC News).

Interesting. Being born in 75 I don't think I hit the generation they're referring to though. But I admit I can identify with alot of their ideas.

I'm a little wary of the labels, since they tend to be used to stereotype and generalize a whole generation, but in terms of stating age I suppose it's useful.

Anyway, Generation Y and Millenials refer to the same group of people. I assume Millenials is an attempt to give them their own title. Most would likely be children of baby boomers/generation jones, and some Generation X parents.

Getting fired a few times and not being able to pay their bills will change that attitude pretty quickly.

Most of these parents aren't from the previous generation...not the one that immediately preceeded them, anyway.

I'm not coinciding with the generation bullshit and labeling a new one every 10-15 years. I'm talking about those born in the 50s and 60s. Which is the generation before me (my parents).

Then take the word generation out of the statement - it still makes sense. "Blame it on their parents."

It seems like every 5-10 years or so, a report comes out sticking the new generation with some derogatory label, then saying a lot of very negative things about them. Perhaps many of these things are true, but isn't there anything good to say about any generation since "The Greatest Generation?" These people need to get real jobs like they suggest from the kids they're mocking here.

lol ... i like the part when she says that some of them are the hardest working people that are out there and will work very hard, where the others either have it their way or the highway.

i bet that took her her whole career to realize.

Sounds like a bunch of consultants invented a new problem for them to consult on to keep the cash coming in :p

Yup. The latest iteration of "Kids these days...."

It's probably only a problem in fields currently largely populated by older employees, and therefore a possible culture clash, with some.

Interesting, but definitely contains some nonsense - I just about laughed out loud when they pointed the finger at Mr. Rogers. And the bonehead who says "no longer is it bad to have 4 job hops on your resume in a year" has absolutely no idea what he's talking about. Occasionally I review resumes and am involved in the interview/hiring process, and too many job hops is a giant red flag for us. On the flipside, there's absolutely nothing wrong with trying to create a fun work environment - that's a good thing.

It does boggle my mind that some idiot parent would call up HR and complain about their grown child's job review, though.

Why, they'll just move back in with mommy and daddy. We've seen it on the forums in the housing threads. People say if they can't pay their mortgage they'll just turn in the keys to the house and walk away from it. That's because they don't have the attitude to work their asses off and overcome adversity. They give up, quit, and bitch because it didn't go their way. They lost. They don't understand losing and that losing is motivation to do better and be better.
My youngest is 4 and I've already had a talk with her daycare about the everyones a winner bullshit. I told them straight up that you can't have winners if there are no losers. I told them they are not helping the children by making them all fell like winners. They are actually hurting them in that they are not letting kids learn at an early age that you can learn from mistakes and that if you are not as good at something a someone else, you can strive and work hard to be better. By everyone being winners now they will be losers and failures later.
