wow, Apple says 3 million iPads sold

2 million sold in 60 days, now 3 million in 80 days

Sales are accelerating, and they are on a pace that will mean 10 million plus in CY2010.

That is absolutely nuts, especially given that "optimistic" pre-launch estimates were ~5 million for CY2010.

As a comparison, analysts think that Amazon sells ~2 million Kindles a year (they guess cause Amazon has never said how many they sell).

Those are amazing numbers. This definitely isn't another Newton. Whether you like Apple or not, you have to give them some credit for moving so many units of an entirely new category of device, and whipping buyers into such a frenzy that they can't keep units in stock.

Their timed releases in certain countries is really doing them well in regards to increasing sales numbers. I'd like to see the graph for sales in the US since it's launch, that's the real tale of the tape.

I dunno, for multinationals like Apple, it is no longer just the US that matters. Their biggest growth with the iPhone occurred in Asia last quarter, for example.

fwiw, demand in the US appears to be quite strong still, with no supply at any stores (my friend just ordered one so he had to check all around).

It matters when you want to trend the sales. Staggering the release in new territories every month and then only releasing overall sales doesn't even begin to show you how much staying power this thing has after initial hype and early adopters.

I just like laughing at the loser geeks saying it wouldn't sell and it was stupid. I guess that's why they are here posting on Anandtech and Jobs is using $100 bills for toilet paper.

Those are definitely some impressive statistics. Does anyone know what the US sales rate looks like now that it has been released here for awhile?

**edit** oops, looks like that question was already asked!

I know we can even keep them in stock in our store! People just love their iPad and to be honest it marvels me how many different unique uses they find for their iPads!

Sales to their stores? Or actual sales to consumers?

Unlike Microsoft with the Zune, Apple reports sales to customers. At least everything I have seen has indicated as such.

Also, to the best of my knowledge, Microsoft always reported it as 'X Zunes SHIPPED', and then other people picked it up and re-reported it as 'X Zunes SOLD'.

Nuts. I already replied in gadgets forum but I think it's safe to say none expected these types of numbers ...especially so in these forums due to PC bias. At this rate Apple will be worth twice as much as MS instead of just as much.

I got to use one a friend had and was impressed but as I stated it just doesn't quite fill a niche I need... my thinkpad x does all that. (at twice the cost)
