Wow, Apple really has clamped down on the tablet rumors

NYT article on tablets/ereaders, references Finger Works as a company Apple bought some time ago and the leak that iWork was coded to work with complex multi touch commands...

Finger Works web page was taken offline in the last 24 hours or so 🙂

I've never used iWork, but the suggestion is that the tablet will be poised to replace a notebook or even a primary PC for many users...

it is probably misdirection to distract from what the islate is really designed to do: drive your car!

I love how the rumors have now reached a fever pitch almost 20 days before the media event lol.

Which has no chance of happening unless Apple prices them uncharacteristically cheap.

Well, even iPods were quite expensive when they first came out and it wasn't for a number of months (years?) until they fell in price enough to reach the ridiculous saturation levels we see now.

True, but the two aren't really comparable. An iPod is essentially a single function device. While a tablet PC is a general purpose device and will have all of the same penetration problems as other Macs. Even if it's a killer product people will still have the same compatibility concerns that they have with Macs now.

If anything it'll come up and be a hit with the already Mac using crowd and the Windows users will think it's cool but go with the Dell imitation that will inevitably come out because it runs Windows.

You mean the mac imitations? The dells are already out...

no doubt the mac versions will be better though. They got this touchscreen down.

True, tablets have been out for a while now but just haven't really taken off. I just figure the Apple tablets will do 1 or 2 things really well that'll make people fawn all over them and then Dell or whoever will produce a good-enough copy of whatever that turns out to be.

Yeah i dont mind the coping but it in the touchcreen phone market no one ahs been able to make a interface as well as apple has.
kinda sucks that apple will end up getting the credit for creating the tablet, if its successful. I am not talking about traditional tablets either, dell has just a big screen thing out.

Like mp3 players i had one years before apple had one. Still apple never made a mp3 player i wanted. But i do have an iphone now. And its great lol, moved from a nokia linux maemo based device. Maemo still has advantages, but when an iphone is hacked its pretty powerful and the interface cannot be beaten.

I know I'm the minority, but I didn't like the iPhone the few times I've touched one. I've got a Storm and I like the fact that I have to depress the screen to actually click on something. And when I get a new phone it'll most likely either be another BB or something using Android. That doesn't really apply to tablets though.

I never owned an MP3 player and I doubt I ever will. Whenever I want to listen to something I just startup Pandora on my Storm. And if for no other reason, I'll never own an iPod as long as it needs that abomination called iTunes to manage it.

I do not understand why everyone is so hyped about the HP tablet that Ballmer talked about. Especially those that are hyped about the fact that it runs Windows 7.

Listen, I like Windows 7, I do, but... if I am using an all touch device, I do not turn to Microsoft for that. One of the reasons that the iPhone is difficult to catch up to for everyone else is that Apple created a whole new OS for the device, looking at the specific needs of the device (How big is the screen? 3" How does someone hold their phone? One handed. Should we design the entire OS so that it could conceivably be used with just 1 hand? Yes.) The reason that I think that the Apple tablet could succeed where every other tablet has failed is that Apple knows how to make an ecosystem, and can leverage the existing iTunes ecosystem (why do you call it abomination?) and the Touch OS (but not the same one, it will have to be modified) to make a device that isn't just a computer without a keyboard.

I think it is distinctly possible that any conception that the rest of us have in our heads about what the Apple tablet will be is going to be way off.
