iPod Who? Creative Intros FireWire-Fast Digital Audio Player for PCs
Load 8,000 Songs in Under 8,000 Seconds

Eric Grevstad

Tue 4/16/02 -- Owners of Windows PCs and MP3 players deny they're jealous of Apple's stylish iPod, but the latter's combination of a big hard disk and fast FireWire transfer (and a premium price -- Ed.) are now playing on the PC side of the fence. Creative Technology Ltd.'s new Nomad Jukebox 3 is the first digital audio player with SB1394 (Creative's spin on IEEE 1394) connectivity to PCs.

Priced at $400, the Nomad Jukebox 3 comes with 20GB of storage capacity -- enough for 8,000 songs, the company says, which you can transfer into the device at speeds reaching one second per song through the SB1394 port on Creative's Sound Blaster Audigy sound cards. Other desktop and notebook owners can connect to a provided USB 1.1 port.

Creative claims the new Nomad's 98dB SNR (line-out) playback quality is unmatched by any other digital audio player, while its Scroller wheel lets you move through its interface and create playlists in seconds -- as well as accessing customization options and EAX environment presets to mimic the sound of music being played in a jazz club, arena, or other settings. Front and rear line-out and optical and analog line-in connections enable real-time MP3 or WAV audio encoding from CD, cassette, or MiniDisc players and surround-sound playback through 4.1 or 5.1 speaker systems.

Don't want to annoy fellow bus or plane passengers? Smart Volume Management controls a song's dynamic range to even out sudden spikes in volume and level the volume of all the tracks in a playlist. Going on a really long bus or plane trip? The device's lithium-ion battery offers up to 11 hours of continuous playback, with a second bay and optional battery letting you double that to 22 hours.

Finally, if 20GB of music (or photo, text, or video) file storage isn't enough, Creative says a 40GB version of the Nomad Jukebox 3 will ship next month for $500.

Not too bad looking actually. Would be better if it was smaller, but realistically speaking, no one needs 20-40GB of storage to run with unless they are literally cross country runners. With that kind of capacity, it would be much more convenient as a car mp3 player or something for long trips.

Eh...I hope they changed their interface. I don't like the way they arrange the songs. I would prefer an interface where you could create folders like Windows Explorer and simply navigate through it. I don't like the songs to be arranged by category. If anyone knows if their interface has changed, please let me know. Thanks.

But you have to have an audigy if you want to use the firewire port? Well the fugging sucks... :|

No you don't. The wording is odd, but any standard firewire port will work. SB1394 is IEEE1394a compliant. Creative is just trying to push their soundcards with all the marketing smokescreens.
