The photos where taken this year...hence the 20 years after part. Considering the ages of some of the children, they were born after the incident.

That stuff is horrible. It's episodes like this, that killed nuk-u-ler power in THIS country. After the 3 Mile Island episode in the late 70's, (and The China Symdrome movie) the disaster at Chernobyl was enough to scare most of America into saying NO to nuclear power...Does['t matter WHY Chernobyl went into meltdown, or the lack of safety precaustions they had, especially as compared to OUR nuclear industry, THIS one episode showed the world what COULD happen with nuclear reactors, and people decided they didn't like it...
In the state of Washington, WPPSS abandonded several reactors that were under construction. Partly because of cost overruns, but more because the tide of public opinion had turned against them, and it became increasingly harder and harder to get funding.

That is terrible, I remember either last year or the year before I was watching something on HBO where they were interviewing people in the hospital?s, which included the children it was very hard to watch

Is that a bad thing?

Not necessarily. Nuclear power is cleaner and cheaper than any of the hydrocarbon burners, like coal, gas, or oil, but, because of many different issues, is more expensive to build, and has some "different" safety issues...When a coal burning power plant goes bad, you get fire, smoke, and the run-off type of pollution, as with any fire, but when a nuke goes bad...well, we saw some pics that shows what can be the end results...
Not many people realize that the 3 Mile Island plant was VERY close to total melt down before they got it under control...The truth wasn't released until just a few years ago...

Pandora?s Box will never be sealed, until we manage some magical process to get rid of radioactive material.

Then if we manage the intellect to outlaw the entire nuclear technology.

This (the pictures and commentary) is crap. Those kids are too young to have been harmed by the accident.

You have to be careful what you read about Chernobyl because it's kind of the Soviet equivalent of the Gulf War Syndrome. ie everyone blames it for all their health problems even though most scientists agree they are unrelated.

Groups opposed to nuclear power make the accident out to be a lot worse than it was. In reality it is estimed that only around 50 people died in the immediate aftermath and maybe a few thousand more from cancer over the last twenty years.

Still some scary ****** though..

edit: Wikipedia has some more accurate info.

I think it refers to what happens when safety amd cooling mechanisms fail and hot nuclear fuel is allowed to melt the reactor it is in.

So tell me, what are the half lives of the radioactive isotopes released at Chernobyl? Twenty years is nothing!

Let's talk again when gas is $9/gallon and it costs $1200/mo to heat your house in the winter.

Maybe you should learn some more about radioactive properties of cesium (half-lifes, etc.) before you make an ignorant comment. This will be effecting their environment and them for a long time, and I think it's very insensitive for you to try to quantify their plight.

you know, i remember a thread i posted when a fire broke out in a nuclear power plant in japan. read it. chernobyl will probablly never happen again. reactors today are safer. i also saw an article in a National Geographic about chernobyl. the world is considering use of nuclear power again. it's cleaner and cheaper. now about the problem of nuclear waste, the congress granted a 1.25 billion dollar grant for a university somewhere (can'r recall where) that is building a high tempature high pressure reactor the is more effeicient then current designs, and pruduces a different kind of waste that has a much lower half life (the period in which the waste it still radioactive.) should it work, it could save the earth. and just so you know, France get's 78% of it's power from nuclear. India and China are rapidly building new reactors and only the US isn't moving. nuclear is the future. there is no doubt about that.
