I just downloaded the IDE/AGP drivers for my ECS mobo (which are around 7megs) and downloaded at a consistent 16KB/sec on a 56K modem connected at 45,333bps.

How is this possible??????

Here's the pic to prove it

It's Geocities, you know what to do.

Now I gotta run upstairs to see if the modem is on fire.

nice desktop.. Who's Karleen? God Bless? intersting file names. And, that shouldn't be possible. b/c at 8 bits per byte, and being connected at 45,333, you should only be able to download @ 5.66K/s

That's the file I downloaded if anyone else wants to give it a try :)

<< Earthlink... wow. Kudos to that. >>

Earthlink just bought out the local ISP (which was pretty good) so they haven't had time to infest it yet. All they've had time to do is raise the price :|

Holy crap, I'm getting a constant 10kb/sec d/l here from that file! Seriously.

That's like some sort of super server or something.

i dont understand why you guys are getting so ecstatic. go try downloading a large text file which is really compressable. you'll probably get more than 10-15kBps :p

That's on my mom's computer. Karleen works with my mom on her buisness venture...or something. God Bless is actually God Bless America. Probably a bunch of forwards my mom got and she saved them all.
Note to self: Install virus scanner ASAP on her computer.

I have no use for a text file. Downloading something that I actually need at a fast transfer rate (for me anyway) is worth getting exciting about.

yes but i'm trying to make a point that the file you downloaded was probably really compressable, hence the fast rate. it's not because your modem took steroids :p

would u get excited if i told that u've gotten over 300kb/sec+ on my cable modem?

edit: what i said above makes absolutely no sense, so i shall leave it as it is...

;) i'm just kidding around. but good job on those downloads.. still seem kinda weird to me. I tried downloading that file on my aDSL connection.. it'll only hit 17.7 for me... oh wait, now it's @ 20. weird. It's not fair if u 56k ppl can match my dsl.
now lets see u get those kinda transfer rates consistently. :) (for mp3, i average 35 on winmx)

It's just the file. Nothing to get excited over. (BTW, same thing happens with .WAV files - you'll get 15+ kb/s transfers on those suckers too)

This doesn't seem physically possible. You can't figure in the compression of the file in your calculation, its raw kilobytes-per-second or whatever that the download is clocked at. So the theoretical limit should be something like 53.3 Kbps / 8 (# of bits in a byte) = 6.66 KBPS <edit>

Somebody who got the file, go ahead and zip it and post how big it is when zipped. This should give us an idea about the compression.

its not that exciting once you realize that a zipped file will never transfer any faster then your modems max uncompressed speed. zip compression is probabyl better then your modems anyhow. probably get 30+kb/s on some text files

When I try to add the file to WinZip I get an error that says "Bad Header"
