sad thing is, doctor gets about 10% of however much you paid. if he's lucky.

I received TWO bills. One for the use of the facilities, and one for the doctor's time. So he did get paid. Bastard!

once, i went to the ER after spraining my ankle...even though my co pay was $50 for the ER visit, I remember that the bill had a $10 charge for two tylenol and a $50 charge for a compress which was a ziploc bag with ice...

I'm in medical school right now.

Lots of illegals and poor Americans without insurance use ER's at hospital's like their own basic doctor, because they treat anyone who comes through. Often times, the ER will not even bother collecting money from these people because they know they don't have it. It's "written off".

But in reality, someone has to pay for the doctors time, and the high cost of running an ER department. That's where you come in. They just charge everyone else (who has the money) a bit (or a lot) extra to cover the costs of those who can't or don't pay.

I had to go to the ER for the first time in life just this past Sunday morning (early morning). Now, I know nothing about healthcare, but my card says ER: 25%, so I assume I need to pay 25% of the total cost. They gave me 2 or 3 different drugs, IV, x-rays, all that good stuff, for a really bad stomach issue. I'm dreading that bill when I see it, mostly because I have no idea what it'll be. Good luck to the hospital on getting all their money in a timely manner. 🙁 And for those wondering, I get my insurance for free from where I work.

Wow...good idea, pose as illegal or poor american (well the latter isn't hard at all since I'm a p0or college kid) and you get free visits!

Kinda OT, but when my grandmother had a pancreas (sp?) transplant, just her first WEEK (out of many) in the hospital cost over $225,000! Thank God for insurance 😀

My son had an asthma attack while in the US...the total bill came to $1200...I didnt have to pay a cent, my medical covered everything...thank god for a great medical system in Canada.

my uncle's heart transplant + first 6 months of recovery cost about 1.75 million dollars. thank god for his insurance covering everything but the copay.

My sister had a three-day hospital stay for pneumonia a couple years ago. The cost billed to insurance was well over $20,000. This was at the University of Michigan Hospital.

My family's bill was $25. Insurance is good when you need it.
