Wow... $1000 for hospital visit

$600 for emergency room use and $400 for the doctor's time. WTF! And my dedcutible is $750. 🙁

**EDIT**
I forgot to mention that this was an out of network hospital and this was the first incident all year that I had to go to the hospital for. Suckage!

yeah, when a friend got his bill back from getting stitches, I decided that I would never go to the EMERGENCY room unless my life was in danger. I can sit and bleed in the waiting room with everyone else until they get to me. Too expensive otherwise!

Yea, the one time I went there at 3am, they also got me with a "late night" fee on top of $600 for seeing the doctor for all of 2 minutes. Sorta like how Denny's switches menus at night. I should have just sat around with a rag to my head for another 5 hours and went to the local medical clinic.

well they do have urgent care that would reduce the costs (somewhat).
$750 deduct is impressive though.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Hospital Bills. Somebody has to pay for all those shinny new buildings/equipment. Not to mention for the people with no insurance.

Long story short, health care in America aint cheap... no question. But its also the best there is.

Really you're paying for the R&D for pharmaceuticals and equipment, and for legal fees from all the lawsuits that hospitals have to deal with.

Medical bills would probably still be expensive, but not nearly AS MUCH, if those factors weren't included.

Oh, but the people without insurance get charged just like everyone else, so you're not really paying for them.

$1K? That's nothing!

A friend's sister has to be life-flighted to a nearby hospital. The duration of the flight was maybe 10-15 minutes. The cost: $12,000.

to me that doesn't sound all that expensive for that level of service.

Yup. Better than dying in an ambulance stuck in traffic.

Ok, I'll bite. What was wrong with you that required a visit to an "emergency" room?

As for the $12,000 helicopter ride, that sounds about right. It's not like they are making money every minute of the day. Most of the time they are waiting around/training but somebody has to pay them for the time they were waiting for a call.

EDIT: Also, considering the helicopter cost several million dollars, it has to be paid for in lump sums like your example since it probably doesn't generate a steady revenue stream from any other activity.

Let's just say I was bleeding profusely and it needed immediate attention. Nothing life threatening, but at the time, it sounded like it was the right call.

Well if there were any doubt then of course go to the emergency room.

Some people go for minor cuts, burns, etc and then complain about the bill because they think it's just a 24-hour Dr's office.

I like living in Canada.
An American trained Taiwanese doctor (are there really any other type?) talked to me a couple of years ago about socialized healthcare and insurance in Taiwan.

My friends pay less than $20 a month to have health insurance. A visit to the hospital costs about $6 for any reason at all.

Seeing a doctor requires an appointment about two days before the fact. You're assigned a number when you make the appointment. Basically, you show up before your number is called that morning. You try to time it right so they haven't called your number yet... but not so early that you're sitting there forever before they call your number.

You get into the room with about ten nurses, the previous patients, and one doctor. The ten nurses are there to assist the doctor and herd you along. A nurse gets your vitals and documents your complaint. Then you get put in front of the doctor and he evaluates you. It's not real private unless you need to go behind the curtain for some reason. He spends however much time he needs with you, the nurse records your treatment, and you're herded out. A doctor in Taiwan sees like 200 patients in a morning.

Health care is pretty good in Taiwan if you've got common ailments. If you get mangled on the highway and crush your pelvis, it'll be better if you just die. It will be much less expensive either way, though.

it's $10,000 to get an airlift in heli to hospital (according to my auto insurance guy (not med insurance))
