Let's say a good friend of yours is in prison. The catch is he inadvertantly he was the driver of a car, and got your best friend killed while driving drunk.

You are out of the country when it happened and cannot go to the funeral.

Do you visit the guy in prison?

Yup, to forgive is devine and all. Also, it's not all his fault, your friend shouldn't have let his friend drive drunk.

What? I don't know if you're being sarcastic or not.

"Oh, his friend didn't stop him so it's not his fault for driving drunk." What if his friend was drunk too? That's, honestly, the dumbest statement I think I've ever seen, in the history of the entire internet.

If you knowingly sit in the passenger's seat next to a drunken driver, you shouldn't be surprised when you get in a car accident and die.

friends dont let friends drink and drive.
It's a shame it happened. But they should have probably called a cab rather than figured out which one was the least drunk. I feel sorry for your former good friend for having to live the rest of his life with the guilt of killing his own friend.

bring him a pink teddy bear and a rainbow cooking apron.. ..he'll get the point.

I'd visit but basically if it were me .. .. I would see him as the killer of my best friend.. ..drunk or not.

That's one facet of the dilemma I find myself in.

I didn't say it wasn't his fault, I said it wasn't all his fault. If he is a friend the op should go see him and find out what happened from him. I wouldn't be surprised if the story started out with, "well we were both pretty drunk..." In that case they both made poor choices and as it happened a fatal choice for one. The guy is now in prison and is probably in more pain than you can imagine. If I was the driver I would probably spend the rest of my life wishing it would have been me who had died. He is going to need a friend and if the op can forgive him he might get one.

Yes. People are imperfect, and sometimes their mistakes have dire consequences. IMO the prisoner in your hypothetical is not necessarily a terrible person, and probably really needs support and friendship.
