Would you upgrade from an S7 to an S8+?

Bought an s7 18 months ago for $450 and have recently been wanting a larger screen. With a discount and trade-in of my s7 I could get an s8+ new from samsung for ~$300 with a free pair of nice headphones I probably don't care about.

How has s8+ aged? The S7 is great but I don't think I'll have an oppurtunity to get $350 worth of trade in for what is a fairly beat up phone (wired charging just started working again miraculously for me -- want to dump it before it breaks again).

I don't think there is enough difference from one generation to the next to justify it, but if your phone has issues, it would probably be the cheapest route to get a new phone that has a warranty. Once the s9 launches, the value of the s7 will drop and you will likely not see anything near that trade-in amount again.

I found a significant difference between the S7 and S8 gen (work phone is a S7, had a personal S7 Edge, currently use S8+). The most obvious is the screen, but I also found battery life significantly better than the S7 Edge.

Since the S9 is supposed to be the evolution of the S8, it's up to you on whether it's worth it to get the S8+ for ~300 OTD or likely the S9+ for ~550 OTD in a month. Unfortunately no one really knows how much different the S9 will be (besides the centered fingerprint scanner and "better" camera).

For me going from an S7E to an S8+ was worth it. The screen is worth it alone. Its also much faster than the S7. I have disposable $$$ (or so I like to think) so I don't think twice about it. I also have a Note 8 and love it, but there is something about the S8+ that I love. Probably the curved edges. I am definitely getting the S9+ as well.

I have the S7 Edge, and can see no reason to upgrade. Handled the S8 the other day and was not wowed; the S8+ might be worth it for screen size, but I find my Edge to be plenty big for my use.

I have the S7 Edge and wont be buying another Samsung. It has a lot of great features but it's slow as snot compaired to my previous androind phones. I'll be going back to LG or Google for my next phone.

What is slow about it? I'm curious. Even my old Galaxy S5 and Note 4 are still fast.

The slowness isn't always consistant. Somedays it seems fine but other days it chugs. Typically I noticed it with opening apps. Apps that haven't been opened in a while take the longest to open. Some apps, like the camera, can take up to 3 seconds to open and even after they open they don't respond to touch for a few seconds more. Factory resets seem to help for a while as do reboots. I play Simpsons Tapped Out and there are times when the game stutters and freezes. My G4 wasn't a speed deamon but it was consitent. It didn't have good and bad days like my S7 Edge.

Are you rooted? I always root and use a custom kernel plus remove all carrier bloat.

But that shouldn't be the case. Nobody should have to do all that crap in the first place. I do know my friend's S6 is super inconsistent and has tons of crap running all the time like anti virus...

But then again, I don't play any games on my phone. Just videos, audiobooks, music, and Firefox in desktop mode with all those sweet desktop icons.

I also found after removing all the constantly running junk carriers and samsung add saved me 300mb of RAM.

I have an S7 and wouldn't trade it. But in your case, with the problems, I would probably would. The bigger screen is better and you will be able to easily sell it in a year for much more than any beat up S7.

I'm not rooted but maybe it would help. My S7 also overheats when I use it in the Samsung VR headset. Thats a little frustrating considering they are designed to work together.

Well, I resented my S7e (Note 7 owner) so I upgraded to an S8. Upgraded from that to a Note 8 asap.

I miss my Note 7. Still have it but I messed it up in an ODIN flash so i decided to rip the battery out and puncture it in my tub for the hell of it. Truly a defective battery. Took hours to completely burn out and to be safe enough to toss. Was bubbling under water for hours after the initial fire and flash. Kept the front part and it still boots when plugged in.

I stabbed an S7 flat straight through with a knife and the battery barely swelled. That's crazy what the Note7 battery did. Although I don't think you're supposed to use water on a lithium fire.

OP, for your situation, I think I would, although I'd probably see what the S9 price would be too as I think you might get somewhat close to that so the extra might be worth it.
