Would you try and talk you brother out of marines?

My youngest brother is in an "easier" branch of service right now but wants to transfer to the marines. I'm not so sure this is wise move since he'll envitably end up in some hell hole with bullets flying round him and probably signifigantly increase his mortality rate. But that's what he wants, action.

What do you think?

i would try to talk him out of it, wouldnt want my brother (if i had one) to die. at least try to get him to join the army instead of the marines

ditto, i'd do the same.
What is he transfering from?

You want to talk him out of doing Marines because it's dangerous? What do you think his job entails right now?

*hint*: He's in the frickin military.

By "easier" what branch? If he is in the Army, and wants something more hardcore, why doesn't he try for Rangers?

Of course not but freedom to do what he wills is also important. Not like I'm going to stop him but railing against it could also be seen as unsupportive which I don't know is a good idea.

I was going to go to the marines, the best branch of the military imho. While I made a 93 or whatever on the ASVAB and was able to place any job I'd want, they wouldn't let me in because I've had facial reconstruction (prior accident; it sucked)

You do know, once you go through basic training in marines you don't have to go through basic training of any other branch, if you are so inclined to join another branch after your service as a marine that is. However, even if you've served basic training in all other branches of the military and try to go into the marines you'll still be required to go through basic training again.

My father is a Recon Batalion Marine, and my mom was in the Army.

sorry to hear that, you sound like you really wanted to be in the marines too.

as for me, I wouldn't try to talk my little brother out of it, if he wants to do it, I guess I can't stop him, as long as he is fully aware of the dangers that are involved.

Yeah, it sort of screwed my entire "after high school career" plan that I made when I wasn't allowed in the services. I do go to college now though, I won't let that stop my final career goals.

signifigantly increase his mortality rate

I don't think it's increased THAT significantly. If you look at Afghanistan and Iraq, the Marines headed in first, and casualties were extremely low. It's only now that terrorism is affecting them, and the army is mostly responsible for that. But heck, even with all the deaths occuring in Iraq daily, the odds are still far from 'significant'... certainly nothing like WW2 or Vietnam.

BTW: would airforce intelligence be making a lot more money than marines?

That's a good question. He may have to loose all his rank (e4) and start over as a private again if he tranfers...I'll be sure and ask him. But AFAIK all branches pay the same depending on rank no matter MOS unless highly specailized like navy nukes or doctors and dentists.

But either way money is not an issue for him.

I wouldn't, but then again I have the apparently misguided belief that there is some kind of honor in dying for what you believe in.

i would respect his decision and support him in it.

no doubt let him do what he wants. I mean you can tell him how you feel and that you care alot about him and stuff but I wouldn't "try to talk him out of it."
