They are offering for $179 shipped. They will send you a box, you send them your Ipod. They will replace the 20 gig HDD with a 40 gig....Seems too good to be true! I recently ran out of space on my 20, and am now thinking about doing this. Any ideas on it?

If your iPod is out of warranty then you probably don't have much to loose. I would like to know how the manage to get it open without destroying it. The iPod is such a seamless unit. I would be afraid of scratching the case. Do they offer any type of warranty on their service?

Actually it looks like the 20-40GB swap costs $180. I can't see why this would be a difficult swap, and have no reason to doubt they can pull it off. Note, though, that their web page makes no mention of replacing your music on the new HD, so you may need to reload your iPod.

yeah, 6 month full service. And they claim this whole process takes 24 hours, youll get it back the next day.

It's tricky but do-able. I bought a replacement battery kit for my iPod, and it included tools for cracking it open without damage. It was not easy, but it worked.

yeah, that wont be a problem.....the only thing I was thinknig about.... my friend has a 40 gig one, and its about 3/8" thicker than my u2 20 gig one...is that from the HDD or what? cause if the HDD is bigger, will it not fit in mine>?

Probably there is some system to open the iPods - after all the Apple has it. It won't be such a big trouble.
Changing the drive probably takes half a man hour of work. The new drive could be imaged with the content of the old drive in something like an hour, if they do that also. If not, the hard drives can be imaged 16 at a time in less than 5 minutes

My guess (and it's only a guess) is that Toshiba has, since your iPod was made, been able to slim down its teeny hard drives. I suggest you e-mail the seller if you're concerned about this.

no, the U2 ipod is a 4th Gen, just diff color


I think ill call these guys and ask if I decide to do it if they can upgrade the U2 one.... But i sure hope they can. I love the feel of the ipod, i just now have way over 20 gigs of music.....stupid dance/trance 😛

Brandon, it's probably not worth it simply because there's no reason you need 20GB of music on your player at all times. I have like 200+GB of music and a 15GB ipod, you just swap stuff on and off. Bigger HD = more platters and on a small drive like that which isn't the most stable to begin with you're pretty much asking for trouble.

i took a couple of nonworking ipods and swapped parts to make one working 10gig (or 15, forgot, used it for a week before i lent my power adapter to my sister, never got it back)

opening it up is easy, use a small flathead screwdriver to force the metal and plastic pieces away from each other...you'll get cleaner results if you aim for where the clips are (i forgot exactly where, but google should help you find something)...

if you're gonna open it up, be really careful not to break any cables...all the cables are very delicate, and break VERY easily...

yeah...I might have to deal with that. right now im only working off my laptop, and its a PITA to sync up with the ipod, because of my lack of USB cables, and how the firewire connection sucks. I think im gonna have to rebuild myself a desktop soon for college anyways, so once thats up, Ill have to just get a dock or something so I can sync my music to my preferences....
