Bigfoot, The Last E-mail Address You'll Ever Need
http://www.bigfoot.com/

Have you ever seen their server down or have mail get lost? I'm kinda hoping this is a good, dependable mail forwarding system. I know they've been around a while, but there's no substitute for personal experience. I just got an account, so I have no idea what to expect.

My sister-in-law says the site was down earlier. Of course, her own IP's mail server may have been down instead. Any thoughts one way or the other?

I've been using bigfoot for all of my mail for more than 2 years, and have no complaints. From time to time there's a little delay in the forwarding of mail, particularly if there's attachments. Nothing too bad though, something on the order of an hour or two.

The one thing you might want to think about is attachments though. You might want to ask bigfoot what the maximum size of attachments is that they will forward -- I know it's not very big. So if you're expecting attachments to be mailed your way, check elsewhere.

Also, as a side note, I haven't gotten any junkmail after registering with Bigfoot, so it appears they don't plaster your name on lists as soon as they get it (unlike Microshaft hotmail and AOHell).

Thanks,

That's good enough for me. It's just that after switching from a local ISP to WorldSpy then Freewwweb and now another local ISP, (all within two months) I figured she ought to use Bigfoot. Better late then never.

I'll tell her about the attachments. That may be a problem.

Thanks Again,

Ornery,

I suggest using either Funcow or UnrealPC email. Both offer 100% free email, both pop3 and web based. Personally I like UnrealPC's web based email better, but they are the same if you use pop3.

Funcow - http://www.funcow.com/
UnrealPC - http://www.unrealpc.com/

If you are interested in signing for UnrealPC email, contact wizkid from these forums (he founded UnrealPC and will set up the email for you).

Funcow can sign you up online, so you can go ahead and sign up there if you don't want to wait.

Thanks RSI, Bigfoot just bounced back two messages that I sent to my son. I have him using my ISP with my PC being the proxy server. Finally got his email working through Wingate here, but now Bigfoot is acting up! Bigfoot is forwarding to his new Hotmail account. Hotmail is working OK with about a 1 minute delay for a 28KB message with picture attachment at the moment.

I'll keep those email services in mind. I'll use any of them that work well, but I need a service like Bigfoot for the permanent address solution.

Edit:

Doh... I'm an idiot! Had the wrong email address for his Bigfoot account in my address book! I just now sent his Bigfoot address a 44K picture in the body of the message and recieved it from Hotmail within 3 minutes. Guess it's all OK!

For IMPORTANT mail, I wouldn't trust any web based service, including my own. Aside from the potential downtime, which is really a minor issue, there are security concerns, which are a MAJOR issue.

I use PGP (with a 2048 bit key) for important email, so the security is not as much of a concern. Someone with the resources to crack my 2048 bit Diffie Helmann key surely has the resources to snag my mail no matter what I do.

I don't like web interfaces though, I prefer to deal with POP3 servers unless I'm on the road for business.
