Would you trade a Q6600 B3 for an E8400?

A few people's offered me an E8400 for my Q6600...
It's a B3, runs hotter than I like, and only overclocks to 3.2ghz...

99% of the time I run application that don't utilize quad core...

I was all about it, until I realized how many people wanted to trade me their E8400... then I started wondering why... lol...

I wouldn't do it, even if you don't use so many quad core optimized applications. There will be more and more applications that will use all your cores ( I wish I had one for GTA IV ) and having it at 3.33 ghz it's just perfect.

It just sounds wrong: " I'll give you my dual core for your quad core". Isn't it?

I would only consider that trade if 1) I was primarily a gamer, and 2) the E8400 could do a guaranteed 4.0ghz at reasonable temps, especially if it's a C0 stepping.

Have the guy show you an Orthos Screen shot after 8hrs stable @ 4.0ghz and with Real Temp running in the same window.

Of course, after he does that, he may no longer want to trade it!

Yes, if you are running games I would do it in a second. If you are doing encoding, I would not.

Thanks guys, I'm gonna do it.

I run my Q6600 at stock 2.4ghz, because the temps are so high 45deg idle... so if I can even overclock the e8400 to 3.6ghz and keep the temps similar to what I'm running now... most of the time it should be faster.

yea if u've been runing your q6600 @ stock then an overclocked 8400 would show a diff. If you can trade your q6600 then that'd be the best route. Otherwise sell it and you should be able to get a 8400 for the money u sold it. You're really not losing anything.

I'm considering upgrading my Q6600 B3 ES for a E8400, mainly because at 3.6ghz even with water cooling my Q6600 runs bloody hot (60c+ full load, 45-50ish idle), although it is bloody rock solid.

I'll be aiming for 4ghz+ when I get hold of a E8400 and hopefully have some cooler temps as well.

I should add that I won't be getting rid of my Q6600 any time soon, it'll be going in my E4300@3ghz rig.
