would you tip the hotel cleaning staff in this situation?

-check into a hotel at 10 pm on a friday night
-sleep late on saturday, so the maid service never came
-check out on sunday morning, leaving the room is good condition (bed unmade, misc. trash in the waste basket, but everything else more or less untouched)

would you bother putting anything in the tip envelope on the desk in the hotel room?

They still have to clean up after you, so I think a small tip would be very appreciated. Then again if you want to get all Usual Suspects about this I don't think their salary depends on tips to be reasonable as much as that of waitresses does.

What is up with all the tipping. People tipping housekeeping, people tipping barbers, people tipping here there and everywhere.

No because they didn't provide you with any service beyond a quick room cleaning.

I never got any tips when I was cleaning rooms at a hotel. I was being paid a little over $7 per hour (in 1995)

Nope. If I'm there for several days and they do a great job, or if I leave the room a mess, then YES, otherwise, they're just doing what they get paid for.

Ah. That's why you started that thread on the all male cleaning staff.

I occasionally leave a tip, but most times do not. It mainly depends on my length of stay and the condition of the room.

However, in most cases, I don't tip because I leave the do not disturb sign on the door. I usually do not want anyone in my room.

I've never tipped at a hotel until I stayed in Mexico for a week. A small amount $1 or $2 is a large amount for a Mexican hotel cleaner, and they did a very good job at making the room spotless. Also, if you tip, they are probably less likely to steal from you, but that's probably something you have to worry about more overseas.

Wrong movie. You're thinking Reservoir Dogs.
