I am a telecommuter but was offered a higher position for 7k more and 10% bonus but I have to go in the office. Right now I have 4% bonus. The new office is 4 miles from my house. Should I take the new job? .

$7k raise and a 10% bonus while getting an 8mi bike exercise a day? Unless you're living in some frozen hellhole, you'd be stupid to turn that down.

man you guys must be fucking ballers to turn down an additional 7k+ for what amounts to an extra 30 minutes of commute/day, plus putting on pants.

Yes, then work telecommuting back into it later.

It was explained that I need to be in the office but I could probaby ask a day or 2 to be at home. What's nice now I could visit my parents out of state and work there.

You've obviously never experienced the joy/freedom of waking up in bed, turning on your computer and calling it a day by lunch time.

I wouldn't give that up until they got to mid-six figures in raises.

I work from home on Thursdays, but I'd give that up for some extra cash, esp. when the commute is less than 15 minutes each way.

I'm obviously not as ballin' as you - I can't even fathom how a mid six figure raise is possible for most people.

Depends what that 7mi commute is. That's 11km, so not TOO far, maybe a 15 min drive on a normal road. If it's 1 hour going <1km/h on a divided highway, then forget that.

Just remember a bonus is exactly that, a bonus. It can be taken away at any time, so don't always count on that. But the 7k raise is pretty good. Keep in mind though, 7k means maybe actually like 4k in your pocket after taxes and all that crap.

On the other hand being able to work from home would be pretty awesome. I would figure out what the extra costs of having to go in to the office is, such as gas, lunch (you'll be more tempted to just order or get fast food more often) etc. If it's not really all that significant then it may be worth it.

Personally in that situation I'd probably lean towards staying because it would be pretty awesome to work from home, but I'd really think about it, as the extra money is definitely nice, and there's a certain social aspect as well. If I stayed home all the time I'd probably get anti social. But it would still be nice. :p

We just have to kind of assume what his current yearly salary is though.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I guessed $39,865,002.55. So another $7k to put on pants and leave the house? No f'n way!

The only exception would be if the job is stepping stone type of position and you're looking to get into management.

I can only hope but I don't know for sure. I worked for this company before but they laid me off so it left a bad taste in my mouth however the owner's brother has always advocated for me but it's been 5 years since they laid me off and now want me back. They also have a swift policy of laying off people without notice. I work for a fortune 20 company now and accrue a bit of vacation every pay. The other one is a big company but held privately.

Yea many days I actually work like an hour or two at most. Some days the entire f'ing day I just browse the net. Boring as hell, but I have to be in the office pretending to be busy...

If I could work from home it would be amazing.

To be fair, the largest raise I ever gave myself only amounted to about $90K-120K. But it would take a lot more than that for me to lose my FREEDOM.

You can't put a price on not putting on pants.

it what level of hell is 4 miles a 30 min commute ?

city traffic, 4 minutes/mile x 2 times/day. FFS there is a punishment light on my daily commute that can take up to 2 minutes just to change from red -> green.

LOL yep I work at a NOC, can totally relate. The job is hours on end of nothing, with the odd spurt of "holy crap everything's on fire!". Would be awesome to setup a NOC workstation at home exactly how I like it. I would have like 8 freaking monitors - actually 9, always good to be an uneven number so one is in the middle. Plus my own personal ones. It would be glorious.

On the other hand, you kinda need to be in an office environment for this job so you can get an idea of what's going on around you.

Yes. Working at home every day gets old. If you can do it your entire career, you're made of different stuff than most people. Not that there's really anything wrong with being a social misfit...

LOL punishment lights, I'll have to remember that one.

There is one light that is like that for my commute. A good 3 minute solid. Worse is when some idiot decides to turn left on the green. Then you're screwed. It will turn green several times before anybody can move. If it was up to me, I'd get rid of left turns almost everywhere, and add turning lanes/advanced greens in more spots, and those would be the only places you can turn left. I imagine that would just add congestion points elsewhere though. For the size of my city, I find the traffic can be completely ridiculous at times. Not Toronto level ridiculous though. You could not pay me enough to live in a place like that. When I visit I don't even drive, I rather take the bus or train and not deal with the traffic.
