say you had been offered the chance to take another position. more responsibility, more people to manage, probably more meetings, plus having to provide on-call 24/7 support about %25 of the time. all that for about %10-%20 more pay per year.

would you do this?

Absolutely not. I'm probably going to take a 50% pay cut to get out of a job I don't like going to.

What's the point of more money if you're miserable.

I took a 30% raise to a job I did not like. biggest mistake of my career.

Nope.
I already had a nice salary with shitty work. Made me miserable. Killed my health. Would not do again. (Though right now I'd take any job.)

save more, retire earlier?

That is a valid point--I think you should take advantage of any time you can save a ton of money, because there are going to be ups and downs.

But 15% isn't really that much more. When you take into account taxes, and most peoples tendency to spend more when they make more, you're probably not saving a hell of a lot more money.

Would the position also require me to put the % sign in front of numbers instead of after them?

Considering how much of your life you're going to spend working (and it sounds like it could be significantly more if you'd be on call 24/7), 15% isn't worth it if you're going to be miserable.

i did this 3 years ago and have never been happier. i may actually be making only 40% of what i used to.

I'd probably just ask for a raise at my current location and take whatever they offer.

I could probably make more than I do now at another place, but I'm happy with the job I have now and see no good reason to move on. Besides, some work at moderate pay is better than no work and no pay.

10-20% is a lot. It depends on what is the actual gain, is it 20K, 15K more a year? What is the actual gain?

Last year I had to decide between two jobs with $20,000+ difference. I went with the lower paying job because I would have been miserable at the other job.
