would you swap a 2500+ for a pentium 4 2.8 (not hyperthreading, 533fsb)

If the switch doesn't cost you any money, then sure. However, it would require the cost of an entirely different CPU and motherboard, which would be quite hefty for a relatively small performance increase. Unless you are planning on doing a lot of video encoding, content creation, and/or 3D rendering, then the performance benefits of going with the 2.8 P4 simply won't be worth it.

For me I will keep the 2500+ and OC it 2.2GHz. It is faster than the 2.8B (IIRC) and it's free! :)

the 2.8A (prescott 533 fsb)

are amazing overclockers...

these things are gettin' very nice clocks on air and with phase change even better than most normal "C" and "E" chips...

i'm pretty sure that an overclocked 2.8A prescott could spank a 2.2 ghz barton at most aps...

(and no, i'm not an intel fanboy ... (refer to sig below) )

Hey, 2.8B's aren't bad overclockers, either.:D

I say go for the p4.

I, too, have a 2.8B, and only through BIOS limitations have stopped at 3.06 GHz. Rock stable. With good cooling and the right mobo and RAM you should easily get 3.2-3.5 out of a 2.8A, so yea, get it.

I'd stick with the Barton. With all the new gear coming out it's a waste to buy ANYTHING new right now. Put yourself on a holding pattern, read all the reviews, save some $$$, and buy when all the cards are on the table.

I'm taking my own advice, too.

AMD all the way, if your a gamer. If you like decoding/encoding and video editing apps, go Intel. Both good procs either way. BTW is it a mobile 2500+ ?

I've heard from recent reviews that newest prescott cores are great OC: many say 3.4 at default voltage is easy, 3.7GHz in some case and on air.

Now, if I managed to get one to run 4.0GHz w/ my WhiteWater setup, got some fast PC4000 sticks, will it be worth the upgrade hassel?

My other idea is to wait few month and then upgrade to one of the A64 Mobile (=<35W).

They may end up costing about the same, since getting fast pc4000 stick will cost, but reusing my pc3200 from current setup my help keep the A64 upgrade option in check.

BTW, I mainly used for gaming, but plan to do minor video editing.
