Would you support some sort of internment of potential enemies if the executive branch said it was neccessary?

This is a hypothetical question of course. If the executive branch came out and said that in order to prevent terrorist attacks it would be neccesary to round up for example all Muslims or perhaps all Arabs in a certain part of Michigan or New York and evacuate them for an indefinite period of time to a controlled location.. would you support that? This would include US Citizens.

Would you support it if the categories were narrowed down for example to all men ages 18 to 60? of a particular religious/ethnic group?

This came up at work today and I was surprised at the response.

that was after multiple attacks in a short time and declaration of martial law, not as a deterrent to future attacks. nobody in their right mind would support this as a preventative measure(no recent attacks).

Quite frankly, one is all it would take for me and it wouldn't matter where it was if it was on US soil. I'd rather be safe then sorry in a situation like that.

This is a great and wonderful country, because what happened in 1987 is that the House, the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate passed legislation for a presidential apology for the internment for the surviving Americans of Japanese ancestry who were interned, plus compensation of $20,000 per survivor.

President Reagan signed the legislation, and I have to say that I brought the letter from the president, by that time President Bush, Sr. had signed the letter and given it to my father, who was 21 years old at the time of the internment, and he broke down and cried, and he indicated what a great country we had.

I have to say that it's very few countries that are willing to look back at its past and apologize for its act, or make amends for its act, as the United States had one. Hopefully as a country, that we learn from our mistakes of the past. That's why it's my strong belief and my strong hope that what happened to us will not happen to any other American or resident alien in this country, and certainly not to the Arab American community in America.

Considering Bush's lack of credibility on any subject, I'd support interntment of anyone in this administration that tried it. :|

HELL NO!

Who's to say the administration wouldn't stop at just "terrorist" types, and would lock up political opponents, antiwar protestors, and anyone else who disagrees with them as well.

While there are some very unlikely circumstances where I would approve it I would almost universally be against it.
I still left a very, very, very little wiggle room because, hey, there might be some set of circumstances where it might be ok for a very short period of time.
Otherwise, let me re-iterate.
I would probably be part of the mob that freed them (hopefully)(I saw The Siege too).

i can see where some might think it's ok, but only up to the point where the realization sinks in that they are the ones that are about to be put on the wrong side of a barbed wire fence, complete with towers that have armed guards that don't look like them at all.
