Would you support public schools being required to teach religion classes?

I know that many people are caught up in the creation / evolution debates that always come up in shools.

Science is a required class in all high shools. In the science class, the basics of biology are learned as well as the theory of evolution (usually).

I think it would be a good idea to have students be required to take a religion class that exposed students to a number of different religions and the origins, theories and values that they hold.

That way everyone is exposed to valuable information. Everyone learns about evolution, everyone learns about creation and it is up to individuals to apply their knowledge to real life.

No. (Edit: I don't think it would necessarily be a bad idea to be informed about the world's religions, but as a requirement...I just don't see it happening.)

Also, wrong forum.

I don't even think 4 years of English should be required in high school. If people don't want to learn it, they shouldn't have to. Force feeding is never good.

No.. which would they teach? All of them? Better just to leave it alone and up the the church/parent(s) to teach religion.

Hell no.

The last time I checked this wasn't P&N. This is only going to turn into a flame war.

Well, I think that english should be required each year (but that's a different subject).

AFAIK, you are only required to take 1 science class in HS and all other classes are electives (unless something has changed since I graduated in 2000). I was suggesting that only 1 year of a religion class be required.

I wouldn't being opposed to a "intro to world religions" class being offered as a high school elective, but I don't think it should be a requirement.

1) it's 2 years

2) no religion in public schools

Learning a little bit about various religions in history class isn't a problem, but I defenitely wouldn't want an entire class for it.

I just wanted to hear lots of opinions and I know many people fear P&N :)

And they fear it for a reason. We don't want to be bothered with crap like this.

Something tells me, I might be going out on a limb here though, that this topic could use a poll.

So you wouldn't be opposed to a section of the class (maybe 1/8 months?) being used to teach about various religions?

Well, by requiring students to take religion, the government would be violating the First Amendment.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

i'd normally be opposed to it but i wouldn't mind if they taught all major religions and showed the similarities and differences instead of teaching only christianity. it'd also be nice if they turned it into a sociological study on the impacts of religion in the world. then i wouldn't be opposed. but otherwise i don't support it.

on one hand, i say no. theres no place for religion to be a requirement in school.(seperation of church and state)

on the other, i think that creation is the flip side of the evolution coin, and both sides should be represented.

what i really feel is christians (because, lets face it, thats who we are really talking about here) pay a substantial amount of taxes, if not the majority of, and should have representation on that basis alone. i mean, "no taxation without representation" right? is it ok to shut their viewpoint out when they pay for the majority of our public schools? no matter what you believe, that cant be fair.

IMO, i think evolution/creationism/all theories on the origin of life should be taught alongside eachtother, just to be fair to all parties involved. which is what a democracy should be all about. but, both sides have their head shoved so far up their respective asses that it will never happen unfortunatly. because, really, no one knows, and refusing to consider on or the other is foolish no matter what your stance on it all is.

Requiring people to learn of religions is not establishing a national religion, it does not break the first amendment.

They don't teach anything! They "review" the same things every year since 7th grade in English classes. I couldn't care less.

I love learning, I hate school.
