It's already happening, so the question should be "do you support" instead of "would you support" :D

Huh? They do it every day. About half the federal budget is paid out to businesses. What do you think the lobbyists are there for? Cheese.

private business if the business promised jobs in return?

It's happening right now but in my State all the Corporate Welfare has produced squat for jobs, in fact, we have been leading the nation in job losses.

OP, have you been hiding under a rock? Why do you think Nissan moved their headquarters from California to Tennessee? It was such a sweet deal that each employee got their moving expenses paid by the taxpayer. so sweet so nice.

Usually it is not so obvious and comes in the form of tax breaks.

Was Tennessee giving Nissan a wad of cash a good thing? A lot of companies that feed off Nissan have moved to the same area. Tennessee gets most of its revenue from a consumption tax. Without running the numbers I would say it would take decades for the state to make their money back. This move probably cost the taxpayer $60 - 80 million... money to Nissan, adding interchanges to the interstate to make Nissan happy, land, etc. If Nissan employees are fond of Amazon... taxpayers will never see their money returned.

We do it in NY all the time... it's called politics. At the federal level it's called "pork". In the end what it does is pay back the political donors who got them there in the first place. Look at all the "green" jobs we've created... lol, I bet not even an Obama supporter can say that with a straight face.

Our tax rates in ny are so bad that businesses moved to Toronto, but the real killer was the cost of regulatory compliance for small business. But that's what we do.

Tax incentives are provided every day by States and Local gov'ts to lure companies and industries to their state/city.

You should stop getting your news from the voices in your head (I can only assume considering just how wrong you are that's where you get your info). The estimation of jobs created or saved by the stimulus is between 1.4 million to 3.6 million. And that doesn't include the jobs saved by the separate auto bailouts.

I can see government providing tax breaks and indirect benefits (such as building roads and providing subsidized land) for a major employer IFF that employer is not in direct competition with those businesses paying the taxes. Thus a local government could subsidize a widget manufacturing plant employing two hundred people, assuming there are no widget manufacturing plants already in the area, but not retail stores employing the same amount. When it comes to major manufacturing, cities and states are in competition. I think that's true to a lesser degree of major warehousing centers such as Amazon or New Egg, but obviously that's a more nuanced question because those Etailers directly compete with the B&M stores that support those governments.

Does it happen? Yes
Do I support it No!

All buisiness deductions should be done away with. If people want to do business, let them pay to run their business. If they cant make money on their own, they should not be in business.

Show me the ROI. They can sell stock to raise the money.

When a Business works with a municipality to build roads, the roads benefit the public, by providing a good traffic pattern. That in itself makes sense. Municipalities are always building or Repairing roads anyway. If some company like Walmart, or some other business builds roads, then a tax incentive till the road is paid off makes sense if they are bringing in additional tax revenue. I would opt for a play where the buisiness pays a good portion of the costs, just so they have some money invested in the community. For instance, if you are building a ball park or a stadium the team should pay for about 50% or something like that.

The problem is that some costs if taken on from a business may never be paid for by the business if it closes down after 2-3 years. Why should the tax payers be saddled with a road to nowhere, or a stadium no one wants to use?

So if the City or State is going to pay for a public road or a stadium let the people be offered a bond issue and give the tax-payers a chance to vote on it. Then make the business sign up for tax plan that they have to pay for at least 5 years. Also give the public the right to end the contract and kick the business out if they do not live up to their end of the contract.

A long-term promise of jobs does not always work out. They business can lay everyone off and close down or move at a moments notice.

That seems weird because those businesses would have to pay an ASSLOAD of taxes in that "Socialistic hell hole".

You would think so, but between taxes, fees etc, that seems to be the case. Remember we have the highest property taxes and my county has the highest per dollar property tax rate in all 50 states. Go figure.
