I would have no problem with it, I don't think an employer demanding that you be sober while at work is unreasonable. Drug testing is already the norm when you have an accident.

If you feel that it's an invasion of privacy you can simply refuse the test and find a new job.

Agreed.

I don't think it's right. At least not for most jobs, when there is an actual sound basis for the job you're doing that you need to be sober, then by all means, but for the most part, no.

NO, definitely not. At my last job sometimes I was required to work very late (like 10 or 11pm and I started the day at 8:30 AM) if there was a problem, or if they needed a new server rolled out. I normally need to eat by 7 or so and I'd go out with some friends, get some food have a few beers and go back to work. I definitely would not have passed .025, but that's none of their business, I got the job done and they had no complaints.

Now I run my own business which sometimes require that I take clients out for drinks etc. I know for certain I wouldn't pass .025 then 😀

What excuse could anyone possibly have for taking an fairly alcoholic medicine that makes you drowsy on the job?

They're really sick and the servers are crashing? For example, at my last job I was on call pretty much all of the time (crappy I know) if I was sick and I took some nyquil to go to sleep then an hour later one of the mail servers went down or something, I'd have to get up and either try to fix it with ssh, or go in. You're saying that they should fire me in that situation?

You are not drunk at .025. In fact, the law even says that you can DRIVE with a BAC of .025. You are telling me that it's ok to drive 70mph in an excursion with a BAC of .025 but not ok for me to add DNS entries and watch a few bandwidth graphs? Does that make sense to you?

Your employer can set any standard they want.

Bottom line is the employer should be able to decide. Do I think it's a little absurd to care about a network admin with a .025 BAC? Of coourse. Do I think anyone's rights are being violated? Absolutely not.

You have no right to work at a given job, if you don't like their requirements you can find a new job. It's really that simple.

Is that not allowed now? I would think that they already have the right, but nobody demands breathalyzer tests because if its necessary you have more serious problems at work.

Seeing as how you're dramatically twisting my words, yeah, I wouldn't mind if you were fired.

..work in transportation..fire..police any safety sensitive position and you'll be subject to a whole range of random..post accident and probable cause testing. Been going on for years.

If the job doesn't want you coming into work that way, I see no problem with them doing that.

I'd see it for things such as utility work, but for the office? That'd be a good sight and drama to see. 😉

But I do think the level should be raised, and I don't even drink.
