I hate my current job.
I'm currently an Asst. Manager at Blockbuster. I worked this job all 4 years through college. I graduated this past May, expecting to leave my job soon after. I'm living rent free with my parents right now, and only have a couple bills. I have enough in the bank to cover these bills for the next 6-7 months.
I just can't stand retail anymore. This isn't the type of job I expected to be working after obtaining my MIS degree. You can only tolerate customers yelling at you for late fees, forgetting their cards, or not having a particular movie in stock so long.
Should I quit? Or drudge through it until I find a job related to my major (which at this point, seems like it's never going to happen)?
You will never ever get a IT job without experience and the Certs as well as the degree to back it up..
the first thing they ask in in interview is how much real time experience do you ahev workin in the field..
second is have you aquired any professional certs to back up that experience...
I had 10 years exp.. working as a Desktop tech/Bench tech but never bothered to get my certs as my experience was carrying me...
well recently ran into a crapload of companies that want my skill set but also want hr exp and the certs to back it up...
thank god I got in IT when it was easy to do so...
so I was Able to get the experience..
and then the certs were fairly easy..
My advice is to go to your local temp agencies (barnett and manpower tech are good) and see if they can place you in a desktop or helpdesk position to get your feet in the door...
then take certs and with your degree you should be able to get a postion in one of the companies you support.
IT is pretty hosed right now... there are alot of VERY educated people sitting on helpdesks right now as there is nothing else to get right now.. the market is saturated and alot of the people in these helpdesks are sporting 5+ years exp most are MCSEs with degrees and still having issues finding a real admin/network ops job..
here in Houston these postions pay alot more than you make at the video store thats for sure.. (35-45k with benefits)
get off your ass and get a entry level position through an agency.
