I definitely prefer to play Crysis at 720p with higher quality settings than at 1080p with lower quality setting. Sometimes I prefer 720p with AA than 1080p with no AA because for most games jaggies are still very noticeable at 1080p no AA.
Resolution is my first criteria. If it supports 2560x1600 then that's what it runs at and I lower graphical settings when needed to get smooth framerates.
My 8600GT is ancient ?!? :'( Oh well, I don't think I could expect anything else. I bought that about 2 or 3 years ago anyway. But, the only game I've ever really tried out with it was Oblivion. I got TLR recently enough, so it just doesn't feel like I got my money's worth from the card. Still ... I know what you mean.
I think I've heard of the LCD vs CRT argument before. But I'm still going to go with non-native resolutions. Looks good enough for me!
Even, back when I used to play Oblivion, I think I set the resolution to lower than my native one, as I wanted to up all the other graphical settings. I just don't see the point of playing a game with the eye-candy set low.
LCD scale horribly when non-native res, especially if you change aspect ratio (unless you use that silly setting where part of the screen is just black, but then its tiny.). And no AA? Resolution makes up for lack of AA and vice versa... I'd like to have one or the other.
On a CRT sure turn down the res is not a problem, on a LCD it looks really bad, its super noticable and i will only Run LCD at native res. Im considering another 4890 just to play crysis at 1080P with some AA on, runs fine at 1080P now but with no AA. And that 8600GT is OLD.
