Would you run back to Intel if 2GHZ came out instead of 1.4 and 1.5GHZ?

I just read on the register (british BS most of the time) that Intel might of delayed p4 so it can launche it at a higher clock. and the bug in 850 was just one video card and its already fixed. So the question it, when November rolls around and Intel comes out with a 2GHZ cpu would you go the Intel/Rambus way or the AMD (1.3GHZ?)/DDR way. (Please no flames on if it can happen or which is better, just which would you get)

I`m staying with AMD for quite awhile DDR-II is what I`m waiting for, I want something faster then the first DDR boards.

It's funny but Anandtech thought the shallower pipeline of the Athlon helped it. So why is a deeper pipeline such a good thing for the P4? Actually, I never liked the look of the deeper pipeline anyway. But I don't gamble except on the Tour De France.

question for u guys,

if its true that the P4 is going to perform at 1.4ghz at P3 800 levels disregarding memory etc then a 2gig P4 goin to be something like 1.142ghz P3 yeah? Next memory, P4 whuppass, Via/AMD DDR? hmmm? Maybe P4 not going to be that much better than a t-bird DDR1, then theres DDR2 coming, QDR?

Although i have an AMD system i feel that intel going to take the crown for 6-8 months, then Mustang and probably QDR sooner than we thought :)

Heh, these message boards goin to be busy ;)

Short of AMD going out of business, I will always support them over Intel. I have never personally owned anything but an "alternative" processor, with the first being a Cyrix and the last three being AMD. I have a feeling that the P4 is going to get Intel into the numbers game more than the performance game. On paper (which Intel is good with...) the P4 will probably whoop on an Athlon, but in real world performance, I am willing to bet it won't outclass an Athlon by much. My guess is that a 1.5GHz P4 will probably be slightly faster in most apps than a 1.2GHz Athlon. Even then, AMD probably has some stuff up their sleeve just waiting for this. Even more likely is that there will be a major recall shortly after the "launch (paper anyone???)" or the consumer won't actually see the P4 on shelves until well into Q1 next year.

<< If it was a good value and it was significantly faster then I wouldn't hesitate >>

Big if there. Rambus, the "new" factor, and shareholder concerns will keep the cost high initially. And even if a 2.0 Ghz chip launched in November, when will anybody but Dell get it? January? And even by then will the chipset bugs (you know they're there) be completely squished? Then there's .18u heat issues. No, Intel and I will be apart for quite sometime yet. I do agree brand loyalty is stupid. Always listen to your wallet (and fellow AnandTechers) first.

No, if it does happen, which there is probably about a 1/10000000 odds that it WON'T, then can you imagine how much a P4 at 2GHz PLUS the cost of Rambus PLUS the cost of that motherboard would be?!? We'd be talking about $5000 just for a CPU, motherboard, and RAM. :p

No thanks. ;)

BTW, AMD has 1.5GHz ready to roll...I remember reading that and that they will gradually ramp to it and we'll see 1.5GHz in January or February. :D

I'm not running back to anything. I'm waiting for the benchmarks, unlike some forum members who are trashing the P4 on the basis of rumors...

I see its not only Wall Street analysts who are herds of sheep. The way I see it P4 could swing either way.

Run back to Intel? I'm already there. My experience with AMD thus far has been that they're not worth the trouble. I'm very happy with my P3, which is currently at home cracking RC5 all by it's lonely little self at 980 MHz.

I will say this if Intel came out with 2gig chip on Tuesday the Monday before AMD would ship theirs for less $$ and better performance so I almost certainly go with the AMD.

I;ve been meaning to upgrade my old system for some time now.

But I will only go with Intel if they can provide the best price/performance ratio for the overall system (motherboard, Ram, CPU). And given the price & performance of Rambust, that isn't likely to happen.

Perhaps a Via DDR chipset for P4 will change the equation and P4 becomes a worthwhile upgrade.

how will people build a p4 system if a special case is needed to hold the heatsinks.

Hey Fkloster, i already have that case and it owns big time! But didn't amd already state that from september until janurary they are going to release 1.1 ,1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5? Bah we might as well wait for tom to review it(i mean bad mouth it) and then we can see how strong it is verse what amd puts out, possibly 1.3 ghz?
