Would you, right now?

Would you donate a kidney to a total stranger if they really needed one? They pay all expenses.

This is a theoritical question, but I've heard lots of answers. I'm currious to see how some respond here. Reason is a person I knew long ago donated one of her kidneys to a total stranger. Just flat out decided one day she only really needed one and donated the other. I personally don't know if I could. I would like to say "Hell yes, without a doubt" but it is hard to say it.

This whole Yesica thing brought this to mind, thats why I asked.

Depends on who the person is and why they need it.

I'm not in the business of donating body parts to felons or anything. 🙂

no. unless it was a family member i would not.

Reason? To put it into 'geek-speak' it is like having a back-up hard drive, in case the first one fails.

no act is a selfless one, people do things to help them selves. if you want to tell yourself that giving a kidney is helping out a stranger, thats you fooling yourself, but deep down, most likely you just felt guilty that you have two, and they have none. So, to put it that way, call me selfish too. I dont take offense to it, b/c everyone is.........to a certain degree

It all depends. My kidneys are precious little HDs storing vital information. If it was a family member-yes. Stranger-no. I'm also selfish.

I commend anyone that can walk into a hospital like that and say "I'm willing to donate a kidney to the next person on the list."

Another question to ask, which of us is listed as Organ Donor on their driver's licence?

I'm gonna need both my kidneys just in case, but I signed the organ donor spot on my learners permit the day I got it. What good are your organs to you once youre dead? For all I care you can take my body and throw it in the dumpster once I'm dead. Its not like I'm going to care, after all, I am dead at all.

I hope someone gets good use out of them.

You can take ANYTHING and say that about it. There is no such thing as a purely selfless act, but there is no such thing as pure randomness in reality either, but that dont stop us from using the word.

It may not be a "selfless" act, because nothing is, but are you going to tell me someone shouldnt be commended for just walking into a hospital and giving a free kidney to the next person that needs it? If thats not commendable, nothing is.

Do you really think that would be the only reason? I'm not disagreeing with you, I just think you're assuming that the only reason someone would do this is out of guilt is incorrect.

Doing something for someone else sometimes just makes you feel good and doing it for that will also keep it from being a selfless act.
