Would you recommend buying second-hand HSFs

I'm eyeing a couple of Zalman 9500s for my dual system, to keep them cool in the summer months. There are some on Ebay for sale for significantly less than retail.

Has anyone here had experience with second hand coolers; is there any downside to buying high-quality HSFs second hand?

I bought a used XP-90. Aside from a few aesthetic imperfections (slightly-bent fin corners), I couldn't be happier.

Considering they're mainly just big hunks of metal, i can't really imagine there being any fault with them.

I'd just make sure you clean up the bottom a bit and apply the thermal gel correctly. Perhaps clean out the fans (if there are any) and make sure that they work.

I've sold 4 Xeon coolers, and around 8 hd coolers so far, and I haven't had any problems reported whatsoever. Be sure to use the cleaner stuff, and you are good to go. 🙂

As long as there were decent pictures showing the contact surface in good condition (along with the rest of the heatsink), I wouldn't have problems buying used.

Thanks for the quick responses, I guess it would be pretty safe then to do it on Ebay.

I guess the contact surface warping could be a concern; but I guess if I'm careful, I should be able to avoid being burnt.
