Would you rather.....

Ok, so we have finally gotten everything together to go to Hawaii in June...
But now my question is this: To all that travel(and even those that don't) i need to know what is the best situation.

Would you rather stay at a 5 star resort with their "worst" room (still partial ocean view, but its smoking with 2 double beds)

OR

Stay at an ok hotel with a fantastic, top notch room?

We ended up booking the 5 star place with the ok room, was this the thing to do? Oh, how would you go about asking for any kind of upgrade upon arrival as well, without seeming too cheap to get a nicer room in the first place?

do you smoke? i've found that smoking rooms smell too much like smoke for me. i would have opted for the latter of the 2 choices.

if you want to get an upgrade you can try telling them you're on your honeymoon.

staying at 5 star that isn't quite what you wanted, would be losing the 5-star effect.

I'd rather pay for quality service, amenities, and location, than the quality of the room.

Think about it.
Would you want a Bellagio-style room at Circus Circus, or a Circus Circus room at the Bellagio?

They'll treat you a lot better at the 5-star hotel. A LOT better. That's why it has 5 stars.

Go for the top notch room in the OK hotel. all you are there for is sleeping and bathroom facilities.

Thats what i was thinking too! I like the idea of having brand name toiletries and the like. But i am afraid that they wont treat someone that is in their ok rooms as good as someone that has a better room. I want to be comfortable while we are in the room, but i don't plan on staying in the room the whole time. BTW, we are gonna be there for 5 nights

I am thinking about saying we are on our honeymoon, but i dont know how to politly ask for an upgrade.

Or maybe "We made a mistake during our reservation. We wanted a non-smoking room."

And see what their reply is.

that is a good idea too....hmmm...i think its still considered "off season" at the time, so maybe we will get lucky and they will have better rooms available

The location would be more important than the actual room... generally the 5 star places have better locations, so i'll take the 5 star hotel.

If you do that at the desk while checking in and start to cause a scene, they may be more "willing." If you've already booked the reservations, call them up and tell them that you made a mistake and would prefer a non-smoking room. See if they give you any hassle about more money.

It's funny... I smoked cigarettes for about a year and then quit cold turkey. Now I can't sleep in hotel rooms where other people have been smoking. For me, the non-smoking would be more important than the location.

Ask for an upgrade or a room move once you are already there. Ask several times per day.
