Having done both, I'd much rather travel to Europe again. It's certainly a LOT more interesting and there's a lot more to do.

I love your reply!

If you're looking for a vacation that is fun, relaxed, and will be easier on your budget, go for the cruise. It will be easier with children and several of my family members who have traveled the world over still say a cruise is their favorite vay-cay.

Also, I have to disagree with torpid's opinions on cruises. I've never heard of bad cruises that serve bland food and have musty rooms. I'm sure you get what you pay for in some cases, but overall I don't think that things would be that bad.

It's what I've heard from anyone who has purchased cheap cruises on older boats.

Europe. No doubt about it.
You can still get plenty of relaxation in as long as you schedule for it and don't try to cram in as many sites as you can simply to gawk at them and say you've been there.
Watch some Rick Steve's Europe on PBS.
AFAIK, there really isn't much on a cruise that you can't do in the US.

Depending how well your children travel, take the cruise. Otherwise send your kids to summer camp for a week and you and your wife go to Europe.

But if you choose the cruise get ready to see the fattest most disgusting Americans you will have ever seen in your life. More disgusting the the folks at an Iowa county fair.

In my not-so-humble opinion, when you take a cruise, you never truly leave 'merica. Even the optional daily excursions are relegated to tour groups.

Take your kids and take them to Europe. Let them see 'merica from the outside looking in. Let them see what 'merica has come to symbolize in other parts of the world. It just might be the most educational gift you can ever give them.

And yes, there are still ways of seeing parts of Europe on a strict budget. If you give me a specific budget, I can give you more specific information.

What's the cheapest you figure two adults and two (possibly three) kids can swing it for? I don't need any tour guides or anything, and am fine staying away from the larger attractions.

Completely depends on where and what time of year.

What time of year are you thinking? What kind of climate would you prefer?

Europe would be more rewarding.
Cruise would be easier.
Which is more important to you?

While I love the Caribbean, I would prefer to go there without the cruise ship. Back in '05 I did a Windjammer singles cruise, which was awesome, but the company appears to have financial issues now, so that might be a risky investment currently. I have no desire to go to Europe.
