Lets say you were faced with the decision of getting to have your dream career(rock star, astronaut, etc.) and a very comfortable salary.... Or an avg income job but you are married to a great wife, and have kids(if you dont want kids omit this part)

What if your dream job is to be a stay at home husband with a wife who has her dream job?

A dream job gives you joy for the duration that you work (lets face it, you can't work every single hour of your life and money only lasts for so long, gotta keep making more)

Great family gives you joy for the duration of your life.

Assuming the wife doesn't divorce you and you're stuck paying child support for 18 years.

i think its tougher to find a great wife than to find that great dream career.

great wife/awful job VS awful wife/great job

i'd take the former. at least you get to have something great to come home to after a terrible day at work.

either way, it all depends on where you are in your life and what priorities you have. none of them can be good/bad, correct/wrong since it needs to apply to individual situations.

Or on the other hand..assuming you don't get fired on your second day. Either choice could have its downfall. :p

Good question, I don't know. My family has always been better in retrospect, however if I never had a family I wouldn't know the impact a family has.

There is nothing that precludes one from having both...but I'd have to say great wife and kids first, everytime, FTW.

Work on the career as a distant 2nd.

Edit:

I'm married to a great woman, have a little boy and I'm in about 2 years away from getting my Ph.D. in chemical engineering. Good, fun job will come in time.

Dream job, I can be the rich uncle to the rest of my family who are really great and I wouldn't mind being a rich uncle to :D It would also let me see some family members who I don't see often enough since they live on the other side of the planet :(

I'd have to go with the Family. Having a nice job is great and all, but what good is it if you have no one to go home to

I think a lot of people can have the "career of their dreams" and still have a family.

It's where the absolute persuit of perfection/recognition in your field and family come into a bit of a juggle.

At some point you have to make compromises. Some of the most successful people in their field have very poor relationships and their personal lives are a wreck.

That elite status in your field doesn't come without a cost. Dedication to your family is one of them.

Wife & kids. I don't mind my boring job, its pays the bills and allows me to spend alot of time with the family.
