Would you rather have a pocket PC or mp3 player?

I'm just curious what you guys would pick if you could have ONLY ONE, a Pocket PC such as an iPAQ, Dell Axim, etc, or an MP3 Player such as the iPod, iRiver etc...?

I myself have a Dell Axim x3i myself (something like $299) and I would probably stick with it (I didn't have a choice myself, I got it free through a class). With it I can check my email and browse and all that over wireless, I can play all kinds of games included SNES emulated games etc, and use it as an MP3 player (not nearly as good as an iPod, less battery life, need to buy expensive card to put a small amount of music, volume can not be changed that easily or well etc)...

But with a HDD based MP3 player you can have like a gajillion songs and great battery life and all....

myself i'd go with a mp3 player. i don't really have a need for pocket pc and really don't want myself to become dependent on one. on the other hand i spend a lot of time on public transportation so music relieves the boredom greatly.

I have little need for a PPC. I had one and it ended up being a paperweight. Luckily my wife uses it almost non-stop during the day for her pharmacy rotations to look up drug dosing, drug interactions, for caluclations, and various other tasks.

I do use my ipod a good three to four times a week though. And when I fly (which is quite frequent), I use it almost non-stop.

Do what I did. I have a Zaurus ( it is a linux based pda so you may no be able to do this with yours) I wrote a script , that allows me to ssh into my box at home. allows access to music directory containg my mp3 etc. Then using a plugin whose name i have forgotten stream those mp3 to me. It not that great as you need wifi access but on my campus wifi is ubiquitious so it works.

PPC. You can do it all. I'm usually not away from my PC long enough to go through even 512MB (size of my SD card) of songs without hearing them over and over. And when I'm in my car, I have a 10-disc CD changer.

As a matter of fact, I can't think of a time where I am alone for that long a period of time to listen to that much music.

That's what I do with my iPAQ when I'm at home. I stream my 6GB MP3 collection to my iPAQ from my desktop and have access to it throughout my home and yard (and I can even listen to songs while I'm cutting the grass).

I have a 256MB mem card for my Dell Axim so I could use it for mp3s if I had wanted.

Though I don't do mp3s. I do encode video for it though and have watched full length films on my Axim during commute ;) (yes my commute is THAT long). It plays them fine and doesn't chop at all either :D

mp3 player,
PPC != mp3 player
trust me, I've tried both and having a dedicated mp3 player is well worth it.
