Would you rather have a desktop or a laptop?

I have both. Nothing beats sitting on the couch or being outside and enjoying some wireless internet to get things done or just to surf. But seeing as I like to game, I like having my desktop too. Laptop for convenience, desktop for gaming.

HP 2510p laptop loaded, and my 360 and PS3 for my gaming needs. Perfect balance.

And no to boat anchor laptops.

when i worked for dell we weren't allowed to call anything a laptop. they were to be called notebooks. that was so that dell didn't invite people to put the computer on their lap and get a burn on their crotch. for which they would sue.

As has been brought up, based on the pole requirements (same exact specs) - desktop. However, no matter what, you can't beat a desktop for gaming, whereas you can't beat a laptop for portability.

At home pretty much all I do is play games, edit video, and play around with Photoshop, so I bought a smartphone for when I'm out. Better than lugging a laptop around, and the laptop won't make phone calls.

I'd say desktop. Of course I havent' turned mine on in about a month as I do not yet have internet access at my apartment. So the lappy it is. Unfortunately my laptop will be much more expensive to replace when it becomes obsolete and it still wouldn't have near the power of a similarly priced desktop. sigh.

Definitely laptop. Desktops tend to piss me off because they're stationary. Maybe I'm biased, I've been laptop only for four years now. The only "drawback" I've come across is lack of upgradeability, but my newest system is five years old so I'm not all that concerned with the rat race of performance anymore.

I like my desktop for my big monitor, my nice keyboard, my nice mouse. I know I can get this stuff with a laptop too, but its just not as easy.

If I could come home, plug my laptop into a dock and treat it like a desktop, then I might say laptop.

one or the other, but not both. i hate splitting my work between two computers. (i know - i should invest in some syncing software)

i love my laptop for its mobility, however i do use the desktop much more often when at home. also i bounce back and forth internationally time to time, so a laptop is nice because i have 'my' computer with me when i travel. even for short trips it is not really a hassle, and when i travel for extended periods it really becomes a blessing. i never use it on the plane though, unless the plane is empty because i am considerate of other passengers who are already crammed in economy class.

i would much rather have a HTPC and a laptop though. i am currently in the planning phase of converting my desktop into a HTPC. (need a HDTV first, needless to say going to set back my project even longer)

if i had the 2.4Ghz model of mine...i'd consider selling my desktop. unfortunately though, this video card cant handle modern stuff with ease (my desktop has an 8800GTS), so im leaving my desktop for gaming purposes and my mom's stock trading business...otherwise, i'd just get her a mac mini/imac and use parallels for whatever windows crap she needs.

Yep. I love my Dell Latitude D630's power, portability and not having dozens of wires everywhere.

I just wish I had gone smaller like the IBM ThinkPad X61s or Dell XPS M1330, although I'm not crazy about the grey keyboard.

Ideally, I would want a desktop for the advantages in power and gaming. However, as far as productivity and practicality is concerned, I would much rather have a laptop.

Exactly. I HARDLY ever use the computer at home (my wife even moved my 22" LCD to the basement because she thought it took up too much room on my desk and I hardly ever used it). It's also nice to be able to take my laptop outside and watch some YouTube videos while smoking a cigar and sipping on scotch.

I'm too much of a performance whore to be able to deal with a laptop. And the laptops that can actually replace desktops are so heavy and power-hungry that they basically can't leave the house.

So you might as well have one anyway.

Since i'm at home atm I have access to both .... but I find myself using the laptop pretty much all the time instead (even for games). There are some areas where it stutters a bit and I wish it had a better video card (currently Radeon x600), or more RAM (currently 1GB), but overall, i'm not unhappy with it.

1680x1050 is enough resolution on a 15" as well. <3 ASUS.

Having had both in my life, Id go with laptop. The portability makes it more useful (surfing the net while watching TV for example), but I mostly play games with my consoles.
