Would you rather be liked or be respected?

well?

Edit: This is what my coworker told me--he was the one that was asked the question (not me). He also told me the "correct answer" after asking the interviewer was that one should prefer to be liked.

I don't know. Personally, I feel that respect is more important as it is work related.

Have to give respect to get it, and so I agree with this. I would pick respect, but if everyone has hate for you, then the respect may not mean much. It's not a straightforward answer for me.

Yeah seems weird they're making it seems mutually exclusive. my reasoning was that being liked but not respected would imply im somehow incompetent and only around as a mascot, someone you'd grab a beer w/ but wouldn't want on a project.

Bingo. I've worked with a couple of people in the past like that. Nice guys but I wouldn't want to work with them again as they were completely incompetent at the time. One of them was hired as a programmer and couldn't even read code, much less type it. And he couldn't type worth a damn either.

Respected most definitely. It's work so I don't care at all if you like me. Just respect me and do what I ask/tell.

A lot of the ways to get respect means you might not be very well liked. Copying a resources boss and their boss for slacking or not delivering will get you respect and the resource will start listening better. But you won't necessarily be liked. Doesn't matter as long as the work gets done.

I could respect his knowledge on the subject matter but I hate his guts. One doesn't have to go with another. I pick Like.

You have more to worry about at that point... if something is wrong, it might not always be obvious.

I find this to be a tricky question. If you choose liked that seems to imply that people do not respect you, and if you choose respect that implies people don't like you. Both situations are varying degrees of bad. If you assume that liked implies that you are liked more than most but respected equally to others, then it would be better to be liked, because you can much more easily earn respect than you can earn being liked. People are far more likely to get better at their job than they are to become nicer and more likable. And the first impression of someone tends to stick when it comes to personality.

If you go more strictly, and being liked means they do not respect you much at all, then it is better to be respected, because otherwise that means they see you as some degree of incompetent or not worth having around.

If anyone ever asks me this mundane, loaded and ridiculously vague question in an interview, I promise to stand up and leave.
