Would you pay to wear blue jeans on Friday?

My company just set a new policy. On Fridays, if you pay $2 (to the United Way Charity) you can then wear blue jeans to work on Friday. Blue Jeans are not normally part of our dress code. Also, the IS people can always wear blue jeans, so this doesn't apply to them.

On Fridays, they will have United Way people at the front and rear door and will issue you a sticker to put on your shirt after you pay $2.

Many have stated that this is a perk for the rich who have extra money. Some people don't have and extra $2 per week. Many have stated that they would want to choose their own charity, since United Way has been accused of misusing their finances in the past. What do you think?

our comapany has its own charityh, called caring and sharing, last friday of every month, pay a $1 and get to wear blue jeans. They then use the money to setup svents in the company and to splonser a few families during the holidays.

United Way has definately had some fuzzy stuff going on, but then again it is a huge agency and it's big news to report any bad stuff about them. The good they do, probably drastically outweighs an bad stuff a few employees did.

Personally I don't think jeans should ever be worn in a professional environment, but then again I don't wear jeans all that much anyway :)

Nope, I get to wear blue jeans free of charge! Five days a week if I wanted to, but I'd probably get frowned upon after a week or two.

I think anytime somebody tries to do a good deed, there will be somebody else trying to beat it down. It's the thought that counts, and I think its a nice one.

I wouldn't pay just to wear jeans. Of course, I wear jeans pretty much every day to work, unless I have to go to an install on a customer's site, then I might put on khakis or something.

It's a nice thought but I'd rather wear dress clothes than pay to wear jeans. If I donate to a charity, it isn't to wear certain clothes, it's of my own accord, and I do some donations every year.

These are interesting policies. I didn't know companies did stuff like this. I've always had casual days every month or two when we could wear jeans and tshirts.

I'd probably pay the $2, and have no problem giving it to the United Way (I believe they help out the Boy Scouts alot, and I'm an Eagle Scout....).

My previous employer had something like that, except we donated the money to local charities in town(which I think is a better way to do it).

Also, two dollars really isn't that much in a business environment either. I know people that go out to Carlos 'O Kelly's, Applebee's, and Subway 4-5 days a week for dinner. That's like an average of $8 a meal. All they have to do is take last nights leftovers or pack a lunch in the morning instead of going out to eat and they've paid for the entire month's worth of Fridays.

I wear jeans every day. Usually I wear semi-dressy shirts (short sleeved, three buttoned, with a collar, but I frequently wear T-shirts... No dress code is good. I could dye my hair bright blue & put 17 piercings in my face & nobody would blink.

"Many have stated that this is a perk for the rich"

are you sure you wanna use the word "rich" for people that can spare and extra $2 a week? people GIVE more than that each week in church.

if you dont like the United Way then who would you give money to? jesse jackson?

I wear jeans a lot to work, but I wouldn't pay to, that's ridiculous. Giving money to a charity is one thing, having to pay to wear jeans is completely different. At my last job they tried to reprimand me for wearing jeans, I told them to give me a raise so I could afford clothes specifically for work. That shut them up!!!

The grocery store I work for does this all the time for the United Way. You can pay $1 Friday, Saturday, or Sunday and wear jeans on that day. A lot of people do it. I'm off weekends and get off of work Friday morning at 7am, so I never get to do it :(

$104 to wear jeans 52 times a year is a little crazy.

Maybe if it was like a dollar or something and (more importantly) you got to choose which charity you wanted to donate to I would consider it if I was in that position.

I agree with everything piku said, I'd rather keep my hard-earned money than be able to dress in jeans. I'll send in my donations on my own, thanks ;)

Yet another example of why I left the corporate world behind 11 years ago. This is, purely and simply, social engineering.
