would you pay more to avoid patronizing a store you don't want to support?

like, say f'rinstance i want to buy a copy of the big lebowski at a b&m store tomorrow. best buy has it for $9.99, and the next cheapest place i could find is borders at $11.24. i can't think of any other b&m that would carry it new (well, maybe fry's, but it would take a lot of time and the additional cost of gas would make it pretty silly to do). so now i'm wondering if it'd really bother me to buy the dvd from a store i have issues with, just to save a buck and change (or >10%, to look at it another way). probably not, because i know that at that price they're barely making any money on it, but i still wonder at what point do i decide i'd rather spend a little more to deny a store like best buy or wal-mart of my business.

so does anyone actually have the strength of their convictions? or does everyone else sell out like the cheap whore i am, too?

(p.s. i know i could order it on deepdiscountdvd.com or anywhere else online for the same price or even less, but this is a last minute gift request so i don't have the time for it to ship)

Just get it from the store you don't like and don't pay for it. Best of both worlds. :D

I'd probably go to the one I don't like if the difference is greater than 10%

I do this. I'm still pissed at Circuit City for their role in DiVX. To this day, I refuse to even look at their ads in the Sunday paper let alone walk into their store. If this means I pay a little extra elsewhere, so be it. Call it my own little boycott.

I've been laughing at numb nuts who do this, for years. People who suffered the hassles of AMD/VIA combos to avoid Intel. Struggling with Linux to avoid MS. Avoiding Buy.Com, despite free shipping and lower prices, just to spite them. Wow, I bet they really missed your money.

You are stupid to do so. Save the money. I'd rather know that I save money and put a few bucks in someone that disgusts me's pocket, then to know that I'm paying extra just to put it into another person's greedy hands. The lesser of two evils?

exactly

Yeah, no doubt. Go to the closest store that sells the same movie and price match it.

And I avoid stores that I don't like. If you feel that you were wronged by a business, why would you continue to patronize them?

When these stores price match each other on movies, usually they're LOSING money. So if you really want to stick it to Best Buy, buy it there, so they LOSE money on that title.

Well I honestly pay more at a place that provides a good customer experience. So yeah I will pay more somewhere else. I don't do it in spite, I do it to support stores that feel that customer service is important.

With markups, I'm pretty sure that BB is still making money on the deal (albeit not nearly as much as normal). I'd go buy it from the other place if you really spite BB.

Yeah. I don't shop at Wal Mart unless I have to. People can say "Oh they won't miss your money". Well no sh!t they won't miss my money, but I can't shop at those places in good conscience. I wonder how many people here know what a conscience is. Yet these are probably the same people who preach libertarianism, and consumers deciding whether to support businesses they agree with. Well consumer regulation doesn't quite work when people just buy what is cheapest now does it?

I work in retail, and believe me, they are not making money when they comp each other.

I don't shop at Wal-Mart. Support local stores instead. People say they "won't miss my money" but it has to start somewhere. A lot of people are convinced they can't make a difference, and they just throw their arms up and pass the buck to let someone else handle it. It's one of the reasons this country is going down the tubes...but you'd be surprised at what one person can do. Multiply it by a hundred and that's a hundred more...you get the idea.

I'd rather drop $13 at my local auto parts store than drop $9 or $10 at Wal-Mart for my oil and filter.

Yeah, brilliant. I decided to help 'the little guy' recently when I needed a drill bit in a hurry. I went to the local hardware store instead of Lowes, which was right next door. They wanted twice as much money for the same items! WTF? Nobody is more glad than me to have Walmart, Kmart, Lowes and Home Depot put these gouging mutherfvckers out of business!

"Who pissed in your cornflakes this mroning Ornery?"

Benjamin Lee and his smart mouth. No skin off my nose... considering the source.

No, not really. I'll sometimes spend more with a local mom 'n pop store as opposed to shopping at a big chain, but that's just so that I can help them out (and the fact that depending on the store it can be more convenient to shop there). For instance, there's a small family owned hardware store about a mile from my house and their stuff is usually more expensive than Home Depot which is a good 15 mins. away. So, as much as I hate spending the extra money I figure it's worth it 'cause I can spend less time doing my shopping and I get to help out a local business.

Edit:

Yikes, I guess our takes on this matter are a bit different Ornery. If I had a home Depot/Lowe's that close I'd probably go there too, but for me the convenient location of the mom 'n pop store usually keeps me going back.

I highly doubt this, considering BB buying power.

I do this.

Way back when I was in high school i had a job at Target. Target was the most horrible employer i have ever had. They treated me and other employees like dog sh*t. To this day, 17 years later I will not buy or even step foot in a Target store.

I avoid Walmart when at all possible but its more because I hate dealing with all the other idiots in there more than I hate the store.

I do goto a local hardware store fairly often and they are more expensive than the big stores but they also can usually figure out what I want when I don't know what the hell I am talking about :). Plus its a lot closer.
