Have YOU, Mr. or Mrs. M&S lurker/poster, enjoyed this forum? Have you always dreamed of wielding limited power for absolutely no pay? Admit it, you've always wondered if those wild rumors about the palm trees, exotic personal attendants, and three ply TP in the legendary Moderator's Rest Room are true?

If so, and you'd like to give back, post here and tell us why you'd like to the new Memory and Storage Moderator, and a brief description of what you envision the role entails.

Hurry! We are only considering the first 4,000 applicants.

well, seeing as noone has posted here yet, I figured I would step forward and give it a try. I have moderated forums, game servers, and clans. Usually they have a relatively small base though, when compared to anandtech.

To me, a good moderator is someone who keeps their cool, is as unbiased as possible, and flexes their power when necessary, not because they feel like it. They uphold the rules, and are by the book in the sense that they follow the procedures, rules, and protocol of their community (whether it be a game, forum, or clan/guild.) They keep rowdy members in line, but they do not overstep their authority, and respect the rules which they enforce.

Also, a moderator is a sort of leader. They encourage people to communicate intelligently and civilly, to think critically, and act as a role model for good behavior. When someone strays from the rules, they are there to set them back on the path.

But why would someone want to be a moderator? Some people are natural leaders, and are good at helping and teaching others. I try to be this way. Furthermore, good moderators are what I call "servant leaders." They step up not because they want a shiny title or power to boss people around, but because they want to help others; they want to serve.

In my gaming organization, with about 1300 members, this is very important for our officers. They are integral to the clan, they manage funds and game servers, they enforce rules, and they help others, whether it be in training for skill, or to make them into future leaders. They can help with technical problems, solve problems between members, and they can make the environment more fun for others.

On anandtech, we have thousands of readers and posters. There are many people with many different personalities, and we are expected to more or less get along. A moderator prevents drama, solves conflicts, removes hurtful or inappropriate posts, and helps others get along.

As a moderator, my job, in short, would be to help others, and enforce our rules. Though I do not know as much about SSD's and HDD's as some people, I know a fair amount about the subject matter, I have my A+ cert, and I am willing to help contribute and moderate how I can.

Dunno how anyone can follow Shmee's description of a MOD but, I would like to be a moderator based on the fact that being able to help others who are starting out in the computer or coaxing our 'seasoned veterans' in the 'memory and storage' areas to pass on their knowledge is my passion.

I haven't moderated any other forums but, I don't believe people who come in here should be thinking 'people are smarter than me'. People who come in here know 'different things' about memory and storage -- a collective -- if you will. Kinda like the BORG of storage & memory.

LOL

Thank-you, Shmee and Burner27! We are at the mere beginning of this process, so please don't feel ignored if we don't get back to either of you right away.

Meanwhile, anyone else who wishes to come forth and put their name in contention, please do so.

I would consider joining the volunteer list if we could carve out an SSD forum.

I'm sure this has come up before, but memory and storage are just too much for one topic on an enthusiast site.

Beyond this, it would be paradise to separate Mechanical from Solid State drives.

Of course people still want to discuss mechanical drives for the foreseeable future, but we want them for different reasons and want to say different things about them.

I officially make a motion. Will anyone second it?

New forums:
SSDs
HDDs (or mechanical drives, or "classical drives", or whatever you like)
Memory (or system memory, or volitile memory, or memory modules, etc)

Shmee that was a pretty good butt smooch, but to be a moderator you must have the following qualities:

Relentless Sarcasm
Impatience
Zero Tolerance
Unwilling to help others with computer problems
Short tempered
and most of all, you must be able to fly off the handle at a noob without a second thought, and be able to ban someone immediately and without warning without giving the person a chance to explain/defend oneself.

I have none of these qualities, neither does Shmee. You can remove both of us from the short list.

Oh wait, that's Tom's Hardware I was thinking of. Nevermind.
