I think most parents would assume they were lying. "Oh no johnny would never do that!" seems the common response when confronted with less dire examples of their child's bad behavior.

I don't understand why people think you need to lie.

Politely decline to talk to the police. Always.

The real answer is that thug children who commit crimes are almost always raised by bad parents. Very few thug children were raised well, by parents who taught them right from wrong. And when I say "raised well" I don't just mean given enough. I mean given a good moral and ethical education balanced with the ability to empathize with others.

I raised my three children to understand that if they were doing something evil I would consider that I had a hand in their acts and would do what I could to remedy that. Much like an owner who raised a vicious dog that attacks, it's your job to put it down if it becomes a problem. It's called responsibility.

That's what I've always said, but I'd probably wuss out and lie my head off to the cops if one of my kids committed murder. I'd be heartbroken beyond belief.
