My GF's Mom's younger sister, needs $10,000(US dollars) applying for a student visa(for her son). Need the cash immediately to show they could support their son's education. The money needs to stay in their account til July, 2004. :( I have the money but cashing it out and handing it to someone just kills me :(

What would you do?

UPDATE:

MONEY is still in my account. No check has been written. Phewwwwww......

Another Update on monday as i clear things up.

Thanks everyone for your concern and support!!!

LATE UPDATE:

I'm sorry for the late reply boys and girls. Due to some screwups by co-workers at work, I had to cover their a$$ which leaves me no time to check back on ATOT :( Anyway, after getting so much support from this thread, I decided to do some researches for a international student visa. thanks to some of the folks who had provided me with links!!! :)

that night, I had a talk with my GF going over some of my concerns and explained to her possibilities of not seeing the money ever again. She completely agrees with me and suggested not to lend out the money. Later that night, she calls her mom to get a better understanding of the situation and get a feel of the seriousness of her cousin's goal for higher education. turns out her cousin happens to be a lazya$$ who wouldn't do sh|t in taking the god dam TOFEL(one of the requirement in getting the I20 application). She was pretty upset knowning her cousin wasn't serious and decided to not lend out the money. :|

Depends on if I could afford it, if it was going to a worthwhile cause, and if there was any chance in H-E-double hockey sticks I'd see the money again in my lifetime.

This isn't even a relative of yours. I personally wouldn't do it. You don't know if you and your GF are even going to be together in 1.5 yrs.

Supporting one of your relatives is one thing. Supporting your g/f is another. Supporting your girlfriend's mom's sister's SON is a completely different ballpark. This should not be your concern.
Don't get me wrong, I love helping people out. I loan friends money all the time, I have a couple g/fs that owe me around $300 apiece for helping them with rent or car registration or something. I'd *maybe* advocate this if it was for a direct relative of your g/f like her mom or something, but this is not right.

my immediate family, of course. Beyond that no way, although some I trust more that others. I would at least make them sign a promissary note and such.

In your case it looks like your GF's mom's younger sister. How long have oyu been dating this girl?

I had been with my current GF for 4 years so I'm stable and comfortable with her. Yes, its for a worthwhile cause but I have never met that person. I'm sure I'll see that money again else someone's gonna see BLOOD! and I mean lots of it!!

if you do, make sure to make it legal and have them sign a promissary note like someone else mentioned...

only "lend" under the assumption that you won't be getting it back.

also for that amount of money, I would seriously consider getting a lawer involved if you go ahead with it.

if it were me, I wouldn't.

find yourself an attorney and write out a contract

(would it seem too greedy to charge a little bit of interest as well?)

make sure it has a clear punishment for failure to pay by deadline! Perhaps capital punishment...

girlfriend's mom's sister's son = girlfriend's cousin.

Just thought I'd simplify that for you all.
