Psh... I did a contract job years ago. Last day of my contract, they dump a huge job on me. I ended up staying until 12:30am (started at 8am), then came back the day after at 7am. Clocked in a good 2 days in 1. Was not trying to kiss-ass, and had zero future there.

I don't really have the type of job where this could ever happen (my work is my work, I do what I need to get my work done), but I suppose it depends on your bosses expectations and the situation. If I had nothing going on this afternoon, I'd stay and get the OT.

If I liked the job and the people, and saw a future with both then I would stay. Otherwise, my job doesn't exist when it's time for me to leave until I step back in the door.

You get paid by the hour.

Full timers often don't get OT.

"ME. ME. ME. ME. ME. ME."

Of course, the flip side of that is that very often the corporate machine will take, take, take, and still lay you off the second you're not profitable enough.

If it happened on my shift then I would stick around to make sure things were back to normal before leaving.

We had a crisis situation a month or so ago. I put in around 20 hours of overtime over the week and nobody else really lifted a finger.

It really is a thankless job sometimes.

That's another thing that's terribly wrong with people today. You cannot spend the rest of your life fearing the inevitable. As someone mentioned above, you can use that experience too. Just keep working, give it your best, prepare for worst.
Don't let the fear of the worst effect your work, if you do your work will not be at 100% and you will be surrounded by this cloud of pessimism and negativity. You management will see it and you will never be able to climb up the ladder and will be 1st in line to get laid off.

I would stay. IMO, anyone that would not stay should not be in IT (unless they're governed by a contract prohibiting them from staying).

if your shift was just starting and there was a huge on-going issue, would you appreciate it if the earlier shift stayed a bit late to help you out?

Depends on the situation and what my job description was.

It staying was part of my job...then I'd stay. If not...see ya!

I LIKE overtime. Always have...as long as I'm getting paid for it.

I'd stay and help for a little bit, but it's really not my responsibility if we're understaffed. That's management's fault.

Well, I ended up staying an hour. I am not in IT though. I am in healthcare at a big hospital. It was the end of a 10hr night shift, my mind had already begun to shut down, wanting to get out. But I felt bad that I was neffing on atot for 2 hrs while work backed up.

where I work OT has to be approved and in my group they never do.
