Would you guys like a "rep" or points system or something for this forum?

I see this at a lot of other tech forums and deal sites and stuff, and I think it's a good idea. You could earn points/reps/credit/thanks/whatever if another member thinks your post is helpful. This would help people know who really knows what they're talking about and would be a nice way to thank another person for their help.

...if it's even possible.

Thoughts?

We had one years ago, didn't work out. This isn't that kind of forum.

Oh, didn't know that (maybe I totally missed it lol). Not necessarily for ALL the pages, just the hardware related ones/anything other than the social forums.

Doesn't work well for this sort of community and it would do more harm than good.

Some of the most insightful comments I've seen have come from people that are brand spankin' new to the forum. Judging what they know by how many points they have is somewhat retarded and leads to all sorts of problems like point whoring.

Reddit is probably the best example of where a points system has worked out and even it suffers because of the points system. You'll constantly see people karma whoring. The comments that tended to have the high amounts of points where almost always the funny comments and never the actually insightful ones (see /r/science).

I see what you mean. Hopefully people wouldn't act like n00bs dont know anything and treat them with disrespect, that would totally not be my intent with such a program.

Rep systems are pointless. Shit I got a negative rep on a forum one time simply because 2 people voted negatively. Of all the hundreds, thousands of posts... nobody else ever voted. Makes me look bad because of 2 trolls. They just don't work.

Useless and would be abused by Haters.

Then it'd be perfect for ATOT!!

Actually, I agree with those who say it's a horrible idea. Between "karma parties" and such...it gets out of hand quickly...and a person can quickly get smeared...deserving or not.

Just something to be abused again and take that much longer for maintenance to handle.

There used to be a 1 to 10 rating on your user page. (or zero to ten? i forget).

I had a -131.937 or something like that. I guess someone disliked me enough to bother exploiting the shit software we had.

It's broken on reddit too. It leads to censorship, and the removal of reasonable information. It's a white bread, whitewashing of commentary. America in a nutshell.

The last time we had a rep system, I had a 1 out of 10 rating the entire time it was active. I guess that someone doesn't like me out there...

the rep system would triple the workload for the mods, mostly by wimpy members bitching about why they got negged :)

rep systems are good for support-type forums, not neffing :)
