Would you go for a new Yugo?

Quoted from the story:

<< If the MINI comeback has sparked a flame of nostalgia in you, brace yourself. The Yugo may ride again.

The range would include a sedan, a sports car, convertible, and maybe a pickup, Bricklin said in the report. Annual volume would be about 60,000.

Zastava is negotiating a contract from "a major European manufacturer" for engines that will meet U.S. emissions standards, Bricklin said, although he would not name the company. Zastava vehicles would also have to meet U.S. safety requirements, Automotive News said.

Vehicles could be ready for sale in 14 months at prices ranging from $5,000 to $10,000 US each, Bricklin said.

It would depend.

If they had the reliability of Honda/Toyota, then I might consider it.

That's a big might.

<< New car for $5k? Sure. Just as long as it drives me home without falling apart. >>

That's what everyone said the first time the Yugo came out too. :)
I'd still consider getting one though, as long as there's a 2 year warranty(I'd only keep the car that long anyways).

Only if it comes with front, head, and leg curtain airbags - because if I get into an accident with that deathtrap, I want protection.

All Yugo's that I have seen were 2 doors.
They really need to come out with a 4 door for the family crowd, maybe they should call it a wego.

Hehe yeah right I bet a cyclist would stand up better in a crash than a yugo! The side impact beams are probably balsa wood and the airbags are party balloons rigged up with old CO2 canisters from paintball guns.

Uh...no thanks. I'll pay a little more for a car that isn't going to fall apart. Hell, I'm still shocked that people buy KIAs and Hyundais as they are still crap cars. The warm glow from that lower selling price fades pretty quickly once you have to start pumping money into the thing to keep it running.

These sound like a good choice for the young and stupid - anyone with any common sense would buy a decent used car instead.
