My labmate saw a posting for a research study at the hospital I work at and so he decided to sign both of us up for the study. It's a study on schizophrenia and what these people need are healthy individuals who are willing to receive a PET scan and an MRI. For this, they'll pay $200 a person. The MRI I'm not too worried about, but the PET scan is something else. For anyone who doesn't know, PET stands for positron emission tomography and what they do is inject what's essentially radioactive glucose into your bloodstream and take scans as it enters your brain. They say that the radiation levels are minimal (equivalent of getting a couple X-rays done on you) and that the half-life of the glucose is very very short. I was just wondering if anyone knows anything further about PET scans (i.e. things I should be concerned about etc.) and whether it's worth $200 to receive one of these things. It's ironic considering people pay $2000 to get these things done on them and an addition $1000 for the MRI. Any info would be good. Thanks.
