Would you ever quit your job without having another one lined up?

Assuming you're only supporting yourself and, if necessary, have enough saved up to support yourself for quite a well.

I did that with my last job, before I started my own company. I gambled and lost on a raise and was unemployed for 5 months, then landed 2 big clients at once so it worked out :D

I want to right now....and I do have enough to live off for 2 years probably.

but if I did, I'd probably be screwing myself for any possible future (MBA program or just work in general).

Yes I would quit a job without another to fall back on and I have done it in the past.
There are enough jobs out there to not worry about losing any specific job.
This depends on a person's skillset though.

depends on how confident you are on landing your next job within a certain time (as the others above have mentioned)

from my experience, i hated some of my past jobs where i dreaded life at some point, but i stuck with it until i landed my next job. i didn't want to deal with the pressure of finding a job while i'm having 0 cash coming in. finding a [seemingly perfect] job was more difficult for me than it may have been for others.

so if you are pretty confident (taking your experience, skillset, and job market into account), then it might be ok to quit without having one lined up.

Quitting without having something lined up gives you the fear you need to find a job that you really want quickly.

What do you mean? It motivates you to find a job, or it makes you desperate and willing to get another job you'll end up disliking?

Been there. Took me 2+ years and my entire bank account + racking up a ton of bills before I found another job.

I used to do it all the time...fvck you...I'm outta here...mail my check.

call the union hall and be back to work somewhere else the same day most of the time...IIRC, the longest I've been out of work after I drug up was 2 days, and I WANTED a week to get stuff done around the house...

Yes, I did last summer when I moved 3000 miles to California.
Well, I won't be doing anything that drastic. Why'd you move?

I wanted to live in a area with moderate year round temperatures, low crime rate, low traffic and 2 miles from the beach.

How's this?

1. Quit job and move
2. Find a place to live (note that step two followed step one - note the verbiage of step one)
3. Take class to get license to start new job (that I only kinda sorta have a loose commitment on)
4. ??? Profit! (I hope)

Pretend life is an etch-a-sketch. Turn upside down. Shake vigorously.
I'll let you know how it works out.

I probably don't need to ask, but... do you regret it?

no, but i've been thinking about it. I have multiple years of after tax salary saved up and I want to get out of consulting and switch fields.

I'm probably going to finish up my project at my current client, finish out FY07 and then take a LOA and find a new job. From all the people I've talked to it looks bad on your resume, it brings out questions like why weren't you working, were you fire etc?

That my perception on it.
