excluding it being someone you personally knew, are there ever any circumstances where you would give a hitchhiker a ride?

I have, last summer, was some old lady walking to her home; obviously struggling when it was like 90 degrees outside.

I'd like to say I would but the truth is it would be very hard to convince me to pick up a stranger; there are too many whackos out there these days.

A friend of my family was recently attacked and killed in her own drive way by some thugs. They shot her, took her car and ran her over with it. The car was ten years old and she had a whopping $25 in cash on her + some costume jewelry. Someone killed her for nothing basically.

These days if I don't know you personally I tend to stay away/keep my distance. It's a shame because there are a lot of good people in the world who need help sometimes, like a lift when they are stranded.

Maybe. A lot of circumstances would come in to play in my assessing the risk. Location, apparent reason for hitchhiking (stranded car? walking down the street/highway? alone or friends/couple? ...etc etc), and how they look. I'm not too trusting of people I just meet, so giving a total stranger a lift is high on the list of untrustworthy. And how an individual looks and acts, including clothing, accessories, and how they talk. But since there is the range of thug threat, to high-class conman threat, that's even tough.

I'm a good samaritan when the need arises, but picking up a hitchhiker is probably something I won't do unless I'm carrying a firearm. ;) Unless I've had a chance to converse with the individual, or I see they are injured and that is their reason, such as being a victim of an attack.

edit: replaced 'hijacker' with the correct word 'hitchhiker'. Although it might turn out to be the former in a few instances. :p

I've both given rides to hitchhikers and taken rides as a hitchhiker. It depends on the circumstances, the time of the day, the looks of the hitchhiker, etc. A guy in a suit standing next to a broken down car at 3pm I'll offer a ride. A guy in blood-stained camos carrying a chainsaw on a deserted road at midnight I'll probably pass by.

Only if I were in Hawaii and I didn't have my wife in the car. Lots of hitchhikers in Hawaii.

Probably not. People joke about picking up hot female hitchhikers but a woman, hot or not, would come closest to me stopping to pick them up. I guess I have more confidence in my ability to handle them if they turn out to be psychopaths, although a woman with a stiletto in her purse could kill me just as dead as any man. I'd have to do some hard thinking before even stopping to pick up a looker.

I've driven a homeless guy over to burger king to buy him dinner. I spoke to him at a laundry mat after he came in to get out of the cold. He was keeping to himself, and just looked cold and sad. Nice guy, just very sad and depressed.
